You know, emails, texts, IMs, etc...

I swear texts have led to more arguments than anything else I've ever dealt with. The lack of emotion or tone in a simple sentence can create complete chaos.

It's crazy how a simple word like "sure" can be interpreted in a bunch of different ways.

I think I'm going to swear off texting!

yup, although to be honest it only ever happened with ONE particular person who obviously jumped to a lot of conclusions and I was always back-pedalling and in the end it was way too exhausting to keep that shit up

anyone I text/chat with now are normal and know I would never say anything that was meant to intentionally hurt them. We can laugh off misunderstandings

I have to admit that I'm guilty of doing this lately just as much back.

This shit always happens every year or so. I guess it's when the newest crop of orgers realize that they hate me too.

i think it's any type of social media that can lead 2 that. just look at how many "fights" happen on the org because it's really just text. no vocal chords 2 hear the tone in words

I hate texting. If you want to drop a short, coherent piece of information and don't expect more than maybe a short answer, a text message will do. If you want to start a conversation, fucking call them! I hate "helloooo, how are you " texts and I never answer them. In fact, I will probably avoid these people in real life too.

On the org, I also wish that we could see each others faces and hear each others voices more often, when we discuss things. I'm quite sure it would have spared me (and a lot of other people) quite some trouble, misunderstanding and a weird image.

If I really get to know someone through the internet and I actually seem to like them, my main goal is usually to meet them some day (like I did with Viv, Lisa, Phil and Val and so on, or like I will do with Herman and Iwan soon, for instance), but I also got to know some people who I really got a long with, but didn't met yet and who I'm fine with talking on the internet only. The distance makes it easier to trust and share and I quite fancy it that way. Of course, talking to someone on the net only requires both people to go the extra mile to understand the other one and to assume that the other one's intentions are positive only.

I've seen this happen just by being on the org!

It's surprising how people can often misunderstand each other when you don't have tone of voice or accompanying body language working in conjunction with the words. In another forum I belong to, it's always shocking how harsh the blog founder comes across in her posts, but when you hear her speak ( via chat videos created specifically for members), she's the biggest sweetheart with the kindest nature. I rarely text or IM unless it's to confirm an appointment wit someone.
