I... I just don't know what to think.
I was never a Dark Shadows fan, but the initial promo shots of this film intrigued me. I assumed there'd be some element of dark humor, given this is a Burton project. What I see here, though, isn't "dark humor"; the whole vamp-in-the-'70s thing is approached as downright schtick. And Johnny Lee Miller isn't even hot here. I think I'll pass this one up Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Maybe you're right, KingBAD.
This just feels like Beetlejuice with a higher budget. And I wasn't impressed with that flick. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

More stupid Hollywood crap. I had hope for Tim Burton at one time.
I miss the original, scary opening:

Well the thing is that Dark Shadows like Star Trek was the cult show, and neither lasted long, Dark Shadows survived 5 years on week day tv, and a note to everyone the first year of that show didnt even feature all the supernatural stuff, or Barnabas Collins, and even more than that it was in Black N White. Now i got Dark Shadows as a rerun in the 80's, my older brother was a huge fan when it ran originally. And when it was rerun they skipped over the Early Years because it was kinda slow, but once Barnabas was brought in and the supernatural stuff, Quentin Collins later on Time Travel, for its time it was creative. AND YES it was poorly made, it was late 60's budget for a soap opera, shit Soaps are low budget now, back in the 80's when General Hospital (Luke and Laura) was blowing up the actors got $500 a week tops, trying running those numbers by Snooki today.
But Dark Shadows was almost always done ONE TAKE, no edits so even though sometimes it was live and sometimes it wasnt, it always seemed live. Actors struggled with lines, ad libbing was the norm at times, mainly because it was so involved and a tight schedule. This wasnt a weekly half hour show, this was everyday.
So when i heard a few years back that Johnny Depp wanted to remake the show into a movie, i was intriqued and i trust him more because he was a fan and hearing early on that they were shooting in England to give it that feel, i was hopeful. But i thought what were they going to re-do, now Dark Shadows had 2 movies, HOUSE of Dark Shadows and NIght of Dark Shadows, and HOUSE covered the whole Barnabas Saga, but that was 42 years ago, and it was a great film shot amazingly well, and i was worried that Hollywood would start bringing in the "twilight" like vampire shit. And also Dark Shadows ran as a new tv show in 1991 and was excellent, but cancelled despite good ratings, the show was constantly pre empted that one year due to the first gulf war. And as late as 2004 another tv show was filmed for the WB but not picked up, so i wondered how Depp was going to do this and what angle. And i have to say i am worried aboout the humour taken, i think from the looks of it its way too much comedic stuff, the first part of the trailer looks amazing while the after part looks goofy, but maybe it will work, hopefully it will and not turn out like other BAD tv remakes like Starsky and Hutch or Miami Vice. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ so i guess your point would be IT HAD A RIGHT TO SUCK
i was a victim of it in the '60s and yes i was no fan of the soap opera either, so that may account for half the dislike of it. THE OTHER HALF was the pain of watchin people flub their lines, oh the struggle on their poor faces. only strugglin actors could apreciate that, and i didn't start stugglin til recently i am KING BAD!!!

yeah to me thats the beauty of it, its like they were on stage, and to me, you arent in actor till you do theatre, FILMS make everyone look good, just like photoshoots with airbrushing, well thats all FILMS are, sure there are good actors but most good film actors came from stage, its very rare that a an acotr that only does films can translate on a stage. In fact one of the actresses in this film, Michelle Pfeieffer is a dreadful stage actress, proiving that point well.
As for the original, yeah it was campy, but it was the only thing like it in a genre that had nothing like it, you had kids watching soaps, the only other time that happend was in the 80s with GH, and never again. The same can be said of Star Trek that was a show that existed 3 years horrible ratings and yet became one of the biggest franchises of all times, and yes Dark Shadows has done some good $$ after its demise.
