Well, since the title says the BEST (meaning only ONE), it would have to be "Batman: The Animated Series".

The Simpsons stands alone.

Ren and Stimpy -- the prototype for most animated series created since.

But I'll nominate a brilliant series not much mentioned today.

Definitely The Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy, as they set the prototype for the animated comedies which followed (Beavis and Butt-Head, King of the Hill, South Park, Family Guy, SpongeBob SquarePants).

But here's an argument for a couple of cartoons which were decidedly more dramatic in nature.

How come that one of the most subversive TV shows is on one of the most, if not THE most conservative TV stations? Not that I mind, I´m just curious. It seems to me that the Simpsons represent the opposite of what Fox is about.

Do you know the background on this? Has this ever been discussed somewhere?

Fox built its name on The Simpsons and black comedies like In Living Color and Roc. Go figure.

The Simpsons easily, I was already 13.7 years in January 1990 so dd not really watch kiddie stuff. That was more 80s for me. I would have said Streetfrogs as it was on TV 3 here beween November 1989 and March 1990, but saw it was actually made in 1987 so its an 80s cartoon (NZ TV up to 1995 usually could only afford 2 to 3 year old American programmes at best).

The Simpsons started here on Feb 17 1991 and was an instant smash, our first episode was Some Enchanted evening and I think by June 1991 we saw the first season 2 episode Bart gets an F.

I would say Family Guy too as Season One is 1999 and half of Season 2 is 1999 as well, but Family guy really hit its stride between 2005 -2010 (The first seasons were tame by later standards, although Season 3 2001 - 02 was an improvement on 1 and 2). Remember it was cancelled between 2002 (May) and April 12 2005 - North by North Quahog (The Mel Gibson one). Altho I think When you wish upon a weinstein was a one off in late 2003. So its a 2000s cartoon

I chose Simpsons too as Seasons 4 to 8 are its golden period (1992 - 1997) - Got them on DVD whereas the later seasons are not as funny, but Season 3 is pretty good too with the Lurleen episode, Milhouse in love and Homer's brother Herb standouts.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
