I new someone who used their debit card at a hotel in Cali. They came back home to find out their checking account was cleaned out and that all their automatic payments bounced due to no funds in their account. Apparently the hotel staff member swiped their card into a reader and made a duplicate card and used the security cameras to get their pin number.

I will only use credit at hotels and only cash at restaurants. Restaurant workers are notorious for using card readers to store the info and then steal it.

Also, I never use any portable or free standing ATM machine ever. Anyone can own one and set it up, you don't have to be a bank or a credit union. They have done studies and news reports on how the mob and gangs use them.

This is all true but you can dispute the charges if you didnt make them...Same as a credit card... The bank will refund the money..

True, but it took months to fix this tragedy. I'm told in Europe, (Europe orgers can confirm this or not) that they started pin numbers for credit cards. So, if someone had your number they would still need the pin number.

Thanks all.

I have just discovered a neat feature of my bank's website.

There's a link to a page that actually breaks down your spending by categories.

This is GREAT for me b/c I use my debit card for EVERYTHING.

(Like many of you all, I got rid of my credit cards about a year ago)

Now I'm stunned to see how much I spend in "Dining" and "Entertainment" each month. boxed

I have to just buckle down and force myself to do like Carrie does (and like I USED to do) and look at what I'm working with and establish a "means".

:sigh;

..or I can blow my next few paychecks on lottery tickets and go to the racetrack and pray for a windfall....

shrug

My bank is the same and it's how I developed a realistic starting point - seeing what I was already spending on things helped me decide what seemed reallistic to start with. AS you get better at controlling spending you can adjust.

And, as damosuzuki pointed out, it will allow you to see how you're fairing each month. Or every day, as the case may be. My bank even allows me to create a budget plan online, so I can see real-time how I'm stacking up. I prefer my own version, but I use it to eyeball where I'm at on a regular basis.

anyone have any pointers as to how someone can get help getting their financial affairs in order?

1. Assasinate denial and take a long, hard look at what your retirement will be like if you don't buckle down now. Don't forget to allow for medical (and/or other) emergencies.

2. Get hardcore about differentiating between need and want.

I know the budgeting and receipts and spreadsheets are a really good idea, but it's realistically a bit much for a guy like me to expect myself to do.

Most important things for me have been

1. Don't use credit cards for anything.

2. Save $1000 for those little emergencies that you would normally use a credit card for

3. Live within your means--basically, stop buying shit!

I hardly buy anything anymore, as I dig myself out of the hole. I don't go out to dinner, I don't buy clothes, I don't buy gadgets, I don't have a car payment, I don't have cable or a landline, I don't take vacations, I make my lunch for work, I share internet, etc. It sounds terrible, but you get used to it and you start to realize how little a person really needs.

That's basically the way I live now. Since I don't cards for backup anymore, I have $50 per check deposited into a seperate account at the credit union and since I get paid twice a month, that comes to $100 a month. I have about $1000 in there for emergencies and I try my best not to touch it. The way I've found to do that, is have the account to be a savings only with no checks and no ATM or debit card access. That way, I have to physically drive out of my way completely across town to get the money, which I hate doing, which means I won't just pop up over there periodically because it's something that I hate to do so it has a chance to sit there and build up until I have an emergency to where I just have to have it. I'm weak and if I have easy access to something, I'll abuse it. I purposely set it up that way so it will be a pain in the ass to get it. lol

My car is paid for so I don't have a carnote. Someone asshole hit it about two years ago and totalled it out but it's driveable, it just has a big ass dent in the back section of it but hey, it's better than having a carnote that I can't afford and I'm gonna drive that damn thing until it won't run any more. It's old though so it constantly needs repairs so that's why I have the separate account at the credit union because the car would be basically my only emergency since all my bills are pretty predictable. Plus, I always want to big lump sum in there in case it finally dies on me and I have to go find another piece of a hooptie to drive but at least keeping mine until it won't run anymore, I know what's wrong with it. When buy another one, you're basically buying someone else's problems that you know nothing about.

I don't have cable and don't want it even if I could afford it. I don't have a cell phone and never wanted one because I don't want pests to be able to find me any time they want to. With a home phone, you can always say you weren't at home. I have every block imaginable on the my home phone and I told the people at the phone company, I want every block you have to achieve the purpose of my phone bill never ever being more than $30 and some odd cents unless you raise the price of the phone bill. I have no relative out of town so I don't need long distance and I don't want anyone borrowing my phone and running up a bill either. The only "luxury" bill I have is internet service so I basically need the home phone line for that rather than a cell phone. If I'm on the internet, the hell with the phone calls. It was probably someone I didn't want to speak to anyway. lol But in this day and age, I see the internet is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury since a lot of jobs don't even have paper applications anymore.

I also stopped worrying about trying to lose weight. Hey, it's a lot cheaper to eat fattening than it is to eat healthy. Bologna costs a lot less than baked fish. lol

I just got my income tax refund a few weeks ago. The old me would have gone out and bought something big with the check but I went ahead and paid my rent for two months in advance in addition to the current rent which I already had saved up. Pay for a place to lay your head before you pay for anything else. Plus, I'm always deathly afraid the damn car will break down and put me in a predicament of not being able to pay my rent so I try to stay ahead in my rent so I'll have money in the bank if that should happen since I don't have cards for backup anymore.

Now I don't want to be a bad influence or anything, but.... razz

I read article about budgeting a while back and they recommend that while you should get an understanding about where all your money is being spent (needs vs. wants),

you should still include an allowance for your fun activities and not eliminate them

just because they aren't essential.

Kind of like why diets don't work - if you deny yourself the tasty treats, then the

temptation just builds until you meltdown and stuff yourself with cupcakes while crying

about what a failure you are.

So I think dinner out and entertainment expensives should definitely have a line item on your budget, Purplejedi! Because when I come vist you in NY, I want a proper night out on the town and I ain't paying for your ass! (On the other hand - I love NY hotdogs, so I might just be a cheap date.)

With my European credit card you only need the pin if you take money from an ATM machine with it and I think if you use it at any other machine (like for paying at a gas station at a machine, but then again when I did that it was not in Europe), but not for paying with it. For paying you just need to sign and the card, that's it. They never ever asked me for the pin. Very rarely (and mostly not in Europe) they want to see your ID too when you pay. And for paying online or on the phone you need the number, the expiry date and the security number, but not the Pin.

If you ask the rich about the biggest problem created from their wealth, they will usually say their kids.

EPAMost of today’s self-made rich didn’t grow up with money (surveys show 75% of millionaires didn’t inherit their wealth). And today’s rich parents expect their kids to grow up with middle-class values– just as they did.

[More from WSJ.com: When Mom Goes Viral]

It’s a noble goal. But when those parents are flying the kids around on a private jet or giving them a Mercedes for their Sweet 16, it should come as no surprise that their kids lack the same work ethic and hustle as a middle-class kid.

And so wealthy parents today face an inevitable choice: leaving boatloads of money to kids who aren’t good with money.

Gina Rinehart, the Australian mining billionaire, has cracked open the debate with a strange court battle winding its way through the Australian legal system. In short, Ms. Rinehart inherited a mining empire from her dad. Her three kids were also left with a stake in the family trust. Yet Ms. Rinehart shut them out of their ownership stakes, and now the kids are fighting back.

[More from WSJ.com: Finding Food Allergy Allies]

Court documents cited in ...lian media show that Ms. Rinehart believed the kids weren’t fit to manage their fortune. She said none had ever held a real job, unless it was given to them by the family. “None of the plaintiffs (her children) has the requisite capacity or skill, nor the knowledge, experience, judgment or responsible work ethic to administer a trust in the nature of the trust in particular as part of the growing HPPL Group,” she claimed in court papers.

She added that the kids are “manifestly unsuitable” to manage the fund and that it would be in the “best interests of the beneficiaries to force them to go to work.”

[More from WSJ.com: Debt, the American Way]

Ms. Rinehart may well be right. But it raises a natural question: who raised these kids? And if Ms. Rinehart played a role, isn’t she basically using her own parenting as the reason to cut them out?

Granted, kids are only partially shaped by the parents. But for a rich parent to criticize their kids as lacking a work ethic seems, well, a bit rich.

[Related: Kids Are Genius!]

Do you think it’s fair for rich parents to criticize their kids for being spoiled?

i coulda made this a thread unto it's self lol

Well...honestly, I admitted that I'm neglecting the budgeting this past year because, quite frankly, I'm catching up on almost 2 decades of lost time.

I am a firm believer in the fact that there is more to life than the four walls around you. "Before", I took joy in spending my cash on taking the kids EVERYWHERE. Now, I'm just enjoying hanging out, alcohol, and the occassional concert (or titty bar).

There are MANY cool places to come see & eat at in NYC...so it would do you good to come visit before I snap out of this and zip the wallet. wink

OK I may have misunderstood. I read it as they may have had some control over the company as shareholders.

But if it's just an inheritance, then I agree, they should get it once they're of age.
