I know I would like it if I had one, but... I still don't understand why I need an iPad. Too expensive for that.

Those specs are underwhelming. neutral

I made a mistake of not buying the biggest (gigbytes) iPad sold. I may consider purchasing another iPad 2G 64G at a cheaper price.

I have 'upgrade fatigue'

I wish apple would settle down & stop releasing new versions of stuff so quickly.

Y'know...since I got my iPhone, I really feel no sense of urgency about getting an iPad. I know lots of people who have (and love) them, but I just don't know what I'd use it for. I have the iPhone, a Nook that I use if I want to read, an iPod, and a laptop. What else is there, really?

If I had 500 clams to piss away, I guess I might go for it. But I don't so... shrug

They're still going to sell the iPad 2, and it's price was dropped to $399.

Waiting for more info on the specs. Maybe it would be too hopeful to think it has HDMI input this time?

$399 iPad 2 a Kindle Fire killer?

David Carnoy
by David Carnoy March 7, 2012 3:08 PM PST

Apple is continuing to sell the iPad 2, dropping the price for a new 16GB model to $399. You can also pick up a refurbished 16GB unit for $349.

The iPad 2 is sticking around--but only the 16GB models (click to enlarge).

(Credit: Apple)

In recent weeks there's been speculation that Apple would continue selling the iPad 2 after the new iPad came out to further amp up the pressure on competing 10-inch Android tablets, which were having a hard enough time competing with the iPad 2 at Apple's entry-level price of $499.

Well, it turns out the iPad 2 is indeed sticking around, and it's selling for what people thought it might: $399. But only the 16GB models will continue to be sold new.

If you're willing to go the refurbished route, you can shave off another $50, as Apple is selling the 16GB Wi-Fi-only unit for $349 (the 32GB model is selling for $449). That's pretty enticing and a mere $150 more than the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, both of which retail for $199 and are smaller devices with only 8GB of built-in memory (the Nook's memory is expandable while the Kindle's is not).

True, you can also get a refurbished Kindle Fire for less, but by moving into sub-$400 territory with the iPad 2, the choice for consumers gets a little trickier. Just a $100 price chop can make a big difference psychologically and, as I said, $349 for a refurbished iPad 2 will be really tempting for a lot of folks who don't want to drop $499 for the newest iPad.

I just thought tablets were overglorified toys to begin with, but after I got my fire sale HP Touchpad I've been using my tablet every day. Having said that, I wouldn't pay $499 for any tablet, regardless of how good it is or how many features or apps it has.

The issue, though, is that despite Apple's dominance in the tablet category, there is a huge potential market for a reasonably priced tablet computer, as the HP Touchpad, Kindle Fire, and Nook Tablet have shown. The problem, though, is that the cost just to manufacture a decent tablet and its components is around $200 per unit, and that cost itself would kill all but the most deep pocketed competitors (Amazon) to Apple.

I never saw the point in these iPad thingys......then I got one. I have always been a late adopter but end up relenting and love the gadgets I end up with but this one has been the one that has become the most used and behavour changing and I only use it at home on wifi.

I love my iPad2. Yeah, it's a luxury and some people really don't need it.

I love it 'cause I'm OCD or something. I like to watch tv and have it on my lap instead of sitting at my PC.

When ours arrives next Friday, we will have bought 11. For ourselves, for our kids, for use at work. They are all used daily and we already have the need for the 3 we are replacing. We actually could use a couple more.

Not low enough for me. Like others have said, I have my iPhone and love it....basically the iPad is just a bigger iPhone in my eyes. Maybe if I didn't have a laptop I would have more use for it...but as of right now, I can't find a reason to rush out and buy one, even if I could afford it.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Hmm you got me thinking here...I do have the HBO GO app on my iPhone but barely use it. That's one thing I could use on the iPad. Okay, thanks. thumbs up!

Can't thing of anything that I'd get more use out. I use the iPad more than I use my car.
