Thanks! Oh that's just taping stuff off at the start of a day. Trust me. I get lots of paint on me plenty of the time. And with all the spray painting my nails look like I go to a crackhead manicurist.

Earlier today I was picking up wine for dinner at REWE (they have that in Austria right?), and I passed by something that looked like that: now Dave, WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Is that some kinda glühwein-schorle-punch?

That's a strange beverage (quite popular in Austria) called "beer".

It's from one of the (thankfully) many non-corporate breweries in Austria, "Hirter", from Carinthia. Here, many people do not simply buy the "commercial" stuff (like "Gösser", "Zipfer", "Wieselburger", "Schlossgold" etc., because since the "Heineken" group bought them, they all basically share one, boring, watery recipe. Of course, many people don't care, but thankfully there are enough "Feinschmecker" left to really support the private breweries.

This is a "Hirter Pils". I like Hirter, because it has a traditional slight caramel and nut flavour to it (although you'd probably only taste that if you really had a sensitive taste for beer).

I don't know whether you're into beer and whether you can get a lot of Austrian beers in Germany, but if so, may I suggest the following:

Hirter Pils - like I said, it's slightly bitter, but still a "lager" (well, a Pils to be exact), but has a slight caramel-flavour to it

Murauer Gold - a very light, nice to drink lager ("Märzen") from Styria

Murauer Hopfengold - probably difficult to obtain abroad, but if you like the bitter taste of hops and the reddish colour, this is the best out there

Stiegl - the biggest and most famous of the independent breweries; from Salzburg, light, but aromatic

Zwettler Zwickel - from Lower Austria; a "Zwickel" is basically a "Märzen", but unfiltered and naturally cloudy, which makes it light in taste, but very aromatic and sometimes even slightly sweet (I love Zwickel)

And don't forget to drink it either directly from the bottle (when you drink a Zwickel, let it rest upside down for a minute before you open it and clink bottles with the bottom of the bottle; that way, the sediments will blend perfectly; with other beer, always clink glasses with the top of the bottle), or from an appropriate glass (although glass customs are very different in each country). Don't smell the beer, drink it cold, don't let it in your mouth for too long! And enjoy!
