First was PCI , then came AGP , and the most modern graphic cards are PCI-Express

They use different 'slots'

You can't put a PCI and an AGP graphic card on a newer motherboard

The AGP card is faster, with a higher data transfer rate than a PCI card.

If you have a motherboard with an AGP slot, I would recommend buying an AGP video card instead of a PCI card. Gamers (and anyone else who often used 3D applications) definitely preferred that card to a PCI one. Nowadays, of course, they love the PCI Express card, which has even faster data transfer speeds, but as mentioned earlier here, you'd need a motherboard that could accommodate that.

Not too many motherboards have AGP slots anymore. Same for PCI slots (they typically have one "legacy" slot in case the user wants to use some older card there, but I'd expect those to disappear in a few years). Some manufacturers still sell AGP and PCI cards for people that want to stick with their old computers as long as possible.

AGP was meant solely for graphics cards. PCI wasn't limited to graphics cards and was commonly used with soundcards, network adapters, USB expansion slots etc.
