Ya'll pretty much verified what I was thinking, in that opinions about this vary.

What really cements things is the idea about the block of rooms. I don't want to be on the very far side of the hotel, away from the rest of the group as there is a chance the hotel will have thousands of rooms, so we could end up very far away indeed.

My husband and I discussed this again and we've agreed to not automatically upgrade as he initially planned.
