Is DISNEY destined to fail in Sci-Fi flicks? So apparently "John Carter" is a miss.
'John Carter' Pulls Only ...Box Office
For any other film, an opening weekend of over $30 would be "good"...but for the self-professed "blockbuster of the year" with a $250million budget it's not-so-good.
Maybe they should've kept the "...Of Mars" in the title???
So let's run the list of famous sci-fi flicks from Disney;
Were ANY of these bonafide "hits" at the box office?
I seem to recall each one being a dissapointment.
I think that they were REALLY trying to put out the "next Avatar" with 'John Carter'.
Does the House of the Mouse have what it takes to deliver some seriously good Science Fiction???

Is Tron: Legacy considered a disappointment? The box office numbers I found are $170 million in North America and $400 million worldwide with a $170 million budget.

Indeed. John Carter made 100 million around the world in 3 days. They will break even on the release (which cost about $250M total per some estimates), and DVD rentals could result in a marginal profit.
I understand how movies are considered blockbusters, hits or flops when one only looks at US box office, but a lot of US "flops" still turn a profit because they play as well or better everywhere else. [Edited 3/12/12 12:53pm] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I saw the movie and thought it was pretty good a lil heavy to understand all the history and story, but an enjoyable movie.
Disney though didn't market this well. I heard more bout how much of a bomb it was going to be than anything else.

Does talking about aliens on Mars work nowadays? I can see talking about beings in a far off galaxy but Mars doesn't leave much for imagination to run wild.

Tron and Tron: Legacy were considered to be more cult hits than box office blockbusters. But Disney is much better doing fantasy movies than pure sci-fi.
Yet they did an absolutely horrible job marketing this movie. They did not take advantage of the movie being based on original literary source material from Edgar Rice Burroughs, and they tried to pass off the lead character as being well known to the general public when he wasn't. They also tried to pass this off as a kids movie when it clearly was not.

Wall-E was technically "Pixar".

Seems like if a movie doesn't gross a gazillion dollars in the USA on opening weekend, it's dubbed a 'flop' regardless of how well it may do abroad.

I know, I know. It's hard to believe this mute villain wasn't quite as interesting as ol' Darth Whatshisname in the late 1970s.

I was pleasantly surprised By John Carter. I went in with extremely low expectations because of the god awful trailers, but it was good. It is a very well made film, and for a first time live action director I think Stanton is by far, better than 99% of directors working today. It is just an incredibly well crafted film. I hope Stanton isn't black listed in Hollywood after this film becasue I look forward to more films as well made as this. They are extremely rare.
Foe me, the problem was just bad marketing. I didn't even want to go.

In my opinion, if the Disney logo is on the poster then it's Disney.
