Birthday Cake (not Rihanna you fools!)

Post a picture of the best birthday cake you've ever had. Or describe it if you have no pics.

My best ones were a piano one and a music/jewelry box one my mom made. They were recipes from a couple of cake books, but we used some of my own accessories and small toys to customize it.

When I saw the title of the thread I didn't think Rihanna (because I don't know her music), but I did think you might be talking about the group CIBO MATTO and their song Birthday Cake lol

If anyone out there has a Dominican pastry shop anywhere near them ("Dominican" as in from the Dominican Republic) then you MUST try their cakes.

The frosting is like candy, the cake moist, and fillings typical for Latin America (Pineapple, peach, strawberry, guava, tutti-frutti, etc.)

drool

In fact, if you have a Dominican restaurant near you, they probably sell slices of cake for "dessert".

THIS! Because it was my most successful attempt at making a birthday cake EVER and it tasted gorgeous. And more importantly, my son thought I was the most awesome mum in the world.

My mom makes a WICKED pineapple upside-down cake.

I usually ask for that. I can get a cake with icing anytime.

Yum! foodnow

But... when I turned 40, my sister had this made for me:

It's because instead of buttercream or whipped frosting, they make it out of merengue. Egg whites and sugar basically. I remember the cakes in Honduras...after a day or two, the merengue icing would turn a little hard like candy.

I am not a fan of tres leches. There's a Columbian bakery nearby that sells NOTHING BUT tres leches cakes. I mean, it's OK, but not my favorite. The only "wet" pastry I like is an Italian Rum Baba (u saw my pic from Greenwich Village, right?).

nod

For my mom's Bday earlier this month, I found another Columbian bakery near my job...

...it had that sweet "marshmallow" icing that you mentioned, and the filling was one layer of Pineapple and one layer of banana.

drooling

It was deeeeeelicious!!!

Queen Elizabeth

Yellow cake filled with strawberries, Bavarian cream and sliced bananas. A single strawberry crowns this dessert created by Henry Schmitt in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Chicago in 1959.

I don't like that icing either... I loved it as a kid but now its too sweet for me. Give me a simpler buttercream or whipped cream topping.

But the fillings!!! faint That damn guava filling is to DIE for! I love guava!

I am sorta sick of the pineapple since that's the "go to" most common filling, but... banana-pineapple??? OH yes!!!

Oh they do passion fruit-peach filling also, OMG!!!!! drooling

I wanna do a Barbie cake now for my girl who will be 10 this year. Thanks Tinaz for the idea! hug

The Columbian bakery I went to had a strawberry-peach filling, with nicer roses decorating it, but I opted for the "piña-banana". I agree that pineapple is played-out in latin cakes...BUT when all you typically get is chocolate, strawberry or cannoli filling for YEARS going to Italian bakeries, the pineapple is a breath of fresh air.

I still love that super-sweet icing. nod The one I bought my mom actually was reasonably tame.

HEY...wanna know how to make that girl's DAY?!?! Use a Kate Middleton barbie and make it a princess cake/dress.

eek There have been so many in my time as a person. But the BEST cake was my high school graduation cake. My dad went to this high-end Italian bakery around our house and ohhhhhh baby. It was a four/five layer cake that sounds messy, but was ORGASSSSMIC to the tastebuds. I don't remember the layers in order, but it had:

  • One layer of real strawberry fruit
  • One cheesecake layer
  • A chocolate cake layer
  • Vanilla cake layer
  • A banana cake layer

And on top....mmmm. HUGE ass strawberries in this to-die-for cream cheese-ish frosting. That was a serious cake.
