What If Star Wars Episode I Was Good?!

Even though that guy was an obnoxious nerd, I have no doubt that his edits would have vastly improved Episode I
I guess the most you could say about that movie is that it was what Lucas wanted. Maybe like Emancipation was what Prince wanted.
But it made me realize that a lot does happen in these prequels. Episode 1 felt like nothing happened though. My Legacy

I thought it was a great idea to make the overall arc bout Obi Wan. Also keeping Maul alive would have made a better enemy for the audience than the Count Dooku/Gen. Grievious that Lucas handed us.
The more I think bout it the more I like his ideas. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Yeah I agree with both of those points. There was not enough continuity in the prequels. Darth Maul dies, Liam Neeson dies. Annakin is not the same actor. The continuity was what really made Episode 3 good, because it was headed toward something more familiar.
And the change from boy Annakin to grown Annakin would be a huge improvement, as I always saw Episode 1 as too kid-oriented, what with Jar Jar.
There really is no central character to Episode 1. I never would have thought of making it about Obi Wan, and I think Lucas would have a problem with that, but I liked the idea. And if the movie really is about Annakin, then it should have had the same actor throughout. My Legacy

I don't even like Darth Maul, but the fact that he dies so quickly without having much chance to bea character makes him even less substantial, IMO.
ObiWan dies, but of course he is still a part of the next films.
Basically all the main characters are in 4-6, except for Yoda. Episode 1 feels like it doesn't really belong. He should have scrapped it as a warmup and then done the real film after. It couls have come out some time later as a curio.

I also like the triangle between Anakin, Padme and Obi which could slightly mirror the Luke, Han, Leia relationship.
The only issue with this reboot is that the the battle of naboo seems alot like Escape for the death star. I think it needs a space battle, cause it is star wars, but he is right it doesn't work in Episode I. I had a SW conversation with a friend a few years back and he said something that kind of stuck with me.
The main problem with the prequels is that you know where the story is heading and there is no one to root for. We all pulled for Han, Luke and Leia in the originals...no one in the prequels. Combine that with the fact that all three prequels were horribly directed, relied way too heavily on CGI, lacked any type of emotion until the last 5-10 minutes of Ep III, and contained quite a few plot holes. DISASTER.
That being said...I think they could have been just as good as the originals and still wouldnt have lived up to the hype, mainly because we've seen it before. In the 70s/80s, there was nothing that compared to SW. In the 20 some odd years between, we had tons of special effects movies...SW just wasnt as magical anymore.
I still dig them though, just nowhere near as much as the originals. What's funny is that my kids think the originals are boring. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

What if Star Wars Episode I didn't have CGI?

I still think Episode I is an excellent movie for kids

I am completely on board with this guy.
I wish guys like George Lucas and Prince would be willing to give finished demos to fans who understand, and not suits who don't really get it at all, for revision

That was great.
I agree with the Darth Maul issue 1,000,000% (that's why I placed him on my "lame" list in the sci-fi villains thread)

Honestly George Lucas GOT LUCKY with the Original Star Wars!
The original cut was boring and edited like a snoozefest documentary! When Lucas didnt have "yes men" all around him... HI Ex-wife Marcia Lucas & 2 other editors I can't remember their names Paul & Raymond. re-cut that boring mess into a "pop corn thriller"!!!
That wasn't Lucas. That was the 3 editors fixed Lucas's boring non-personality vision for the film into something amazing!
The second film wasnt Lucas either, another Director got real performances out of actors as well as actors (harrison ford) thought up the best line of the movie - The "I Love you".... "I Know" line.
3rd Movie we started seeing Lucas starting to mess up, not killing of Han Solo, taking out the Chewbaca Planet into Ewoks. (The word Ewok isnt mentioned once in the movie!! That tells you how much outside merchandise promotion there was)

No star wars fan would disagree that Lucas at best should just do storylines and approve models.
That is whats wrong with the pre's in my opinion. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

yeah he must have felt the need to prove himself as a writer/director and it didn't exactly work.

I've read interviews from Natalie, Ewan and Hayden, all of which had thus far done stellar work, got no direction whatsoever from George. He was much more intersted in the green screen.
Damn Shame. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Well I cant blame Lucas for that, at the time it was cheaper and easier to go small, ie little people, than go literally tall. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

someone from the films said he definitely would prefer to work without actors at all. It really is a shame, since that is what made his movies good, along with the effects. My Legacy

I've only seen the first three movies, which I guess were episodes 4, 5, and 6. The best one was the first one, which is episode 4, right?

Lots of people think episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back, is one of the best movies of all time.

Not bad... but one big mistake! palpatine was alawys a senator since 1976! So that is a mistake on the guy's part.
I would have liked to see EP 1 and 2 as one movie...but it would end with Anikin grown up and the clones being discovered and used to push back the drioid army(with Paply being the one that brings the cones to save the jedi from sure death at the hands of droids) . the jedi yoda and mace both relize that this is bigger than just trade and mining disputs. I could write a long serious paper on my ideas of how this movie could have been better by using 1977's Star Wars as a guide and reference. But yes, keeping Darth Maul alive for all three movies was the first thing I said leaving the theater back in 1999.
Making the podracers mostly teenage and young humans is another.
There's about 368 other ideas I have.
The one thing they got right was any of the fights with Darth Maul (including the brief one in the desert), and most of his scenes in general. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

one thing they could have really done to make it much better was to have it be Palpy the one that arrived just in time to save them from the droids. Even from Maul! That they are clearly beat! Just as a fleet of ships lead by Papply shows up and they all seem to run away! (all arranged by paply of course) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Better twists like that would have been cool, and also made the character more active, alive, and interesting. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

omg NO, I agree that Maul needed more screen-time and more vicious scenes, he wasn't that evil, he was a loyal and intimidating Sith enforcer, but not particularly evil/nasty/hateful...but his death was basically the climax of the film; without Maul's death, Phantom would be even worse...
and I still think Christopher Lee was miscast as Count Dooku...

I thought 2 and 3 were great, even though there was too much CGI.
I is average, too much stuff for kids. .
