when you go out for a meal or a drink.... what percentage do you leave for a tip for good service??? and what if the service is not so good??? do you ever just stiff your server or bartender?? | |

Typically I double the tax (here it's 8%) which results in a little more than the common 15% tip rate.
If the service is great, I double the total bill (mimus a decimal point) for 20%.
If the service is exceptional and it's a place I want to frequent, then more like 30% or 40% (depending on how much alcohol has been consumed). By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! | |

There was just a thread on this not too long ago.
I usually tip a minimum of 20%. If I'm somewhere that the server knows me and gives me a discount I add the amount of the discount into their tip.
If service is bad I'll tip 10-15%. (If you leave nothing, they may think you just forgot; I think a low tip says "Your service sucked" better.)
I always leave a tip for table service or at a bar ($1 tip per drink). I rarely, almost never, put money in tip jars on counters.
In cabs I round up to the nearest whole dollar and add at least a dollar. For example, if the fare is $7.60, I'll give them $9. If it's a $7.90 fare they might get $9 or $10, depending on if their cab is stinky, if they drove safely, etc.

Double the sales tax, which has ranged from 15 - 18%, that way I don't have to sit and figure out the math. I don't have a set percent, if it's was exceptionally good drop an extra $5 or something. | |

in knowing that waitress/waiters usually make minimum wages, they depend heavily on tips. when they do a great job in serving my table, i tip well. if my bill is $20 -$25.00, i usually leave at least a $5.00 tip. if i'm in a group, i figure in my tip to add to the total bill. if i get lousy service i still tip, though not as generously and i will put 2 or 3 pennies in my water glass before i leave. or i will give my tip to the seating hostess with a reason being i got lousy service. “Transracial is a term that has long since been defined as the adoption of a child that is of a different race than the adoptive parents,” : https://thinkprogress.org...fb6e18544a | |

Here in the Uk it's more the exception than the rule to tip...generally service is quite poor and tips are generally shared amongst staff. If the service i have received has contributed to my night out then i will always give a few quid, but i insist they keep it for themselves. | |

Lousy service gets two coins in a glass... usually its pennies.

I was a waitress for 11 years.
I remember when 2 women came into my restaurant and talked and talked over coffee and maybe one dessert. Their tip was like $5.00 so they obviously appretiated that i did not try and rush them along.
So when I tip I not only take into account my bill but also how long I am tying up the table and how good the service is. If I am ordering a grilled cheese and diet coke that is the cheapest thing on the menu and the server treats me like I ordered an entree and a glass of wine I over tip. In Austria, it is common to tip 10% of the bill. If the service and the food were exceptional, I give 15-20%. If not, I still give 10%, but simply will be as gruff as the waitor. | |

for food it varies from 15 to 20% for average service. less to none for poor or bad service. Bad is they are rude (unless it is part of the place's stick) mess up and then either LIE or try to cover it up. (one made a mistake and charged us for things we did not order and then lied and said there was no way to fix it...guess what the manager did!) she got jack!
poor is mistake or unexplained slowness or lazyness or lack of paying attention.
if it is good then i go higher...
for drinks: i drink cheap stuff so it is like a dollar in the jar for every 2 or 3 drinks. + 10 to 15% when I cash out. (If i order from a table I will make sure to tip the bartender separately as i leave) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" | |

Being from a country outside the US and a place where tipping is uncommon, I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would EVER leave a tip of any amount when they thought the service is lousy.
It just seems completely counterproductive and kind of daft. It's like a rewards based system where you're still getting rewarded when your work is shit.
In fact, it seems akin to the Wall St executives getting bonuses when the company they're working for is going down in flames.

I agree with you... I think its stupid to tip for lousy service. This is why two coins in a water glass is my way of saying "do your f-ing job better or find other work".

But leaving something shitty is akin to an insult, so it's more rewarding to leave a dollar (or two coins in a glass LOL I'll try that next time 4 sure!)...than to just walk away from an empty table (where they'll assume you were just cheap).
The one crappy thing here is that in certain restaurants, when you have a party of 6 or more people (typically) the restaurant will add 15% gratuity to the bill automatically. Just when you may have thought the ongoing battle between the 99% and the 1% was dying down, it may have been reignited. A wealthy banker left a $1.33 tip on a $133 lunch at the True Food Kitchen restaurant in Newport Beach, California.
To add insult to injury the word "tip" was circled on the receipt, and the banker wrote "get a real job" on the bill. The picture of the receipt was taken and uploaded to the blog Future Ex-Banker by a person who was dining with the anonymous banker. As expected, the blog received a lot of attention and has now been taken down. The author of the blog wrote, "mention the 99% in my boss' presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn't sufficiently bow down to his holiness."
People online who had a chance to see the blog post before it went offline and those who have been made aware of it on social media outlets are outraged. One person called the tip a "tale of greed and contempt," and another referred to it as "arrogance personified." The Web's general reaction to this story is eerily similar to an almost identical 1% vs. 99% scenario that took place last fall. In Washington state, a waitress received a tip of no money and advice scrawled on the receipt that told her she could "stand to lose a few pounds."
