Not sure if it was only on the west coast, but that was the grossest shit ever!
west coaster here. yes, i do remember pioneer, and 'twas truly, truly nas-tay. but we went there b/c my mom loved the fried chicken livers and fries basket.
sometimes she'd get gizzards basket.
i believe there is still one near fairfax and olympic.
That was my first job...slangin bird from Oct of my junior year till high school graduation. The most fun I ever had working, hands down.
They were still good then, but I cant even look at tha shit now.
Popeye's on the other hand...
Popeye's hasn't change much at all.
Oh yes they have. When they first came out in the late 1970s, if you ordered the spicy chicken, it was actually spicy and even when you peeled the crust back, the actual chicken meat had orange on it from the spices. It hasn't had that in decades.
Speaking of Popeye's, since you're originally from New Orleans, you may be familiar with a similar place called New Orleans Fried Chicken. We had a few down here back in the early 1980s and they were very similar to Popeyes.
I take it that Church's gets no love in this thread, right?!?
you want that greasy or extra greasy!
two things:
one, on the r&b station we listen to when i was a kid, they constantly, constantly, constantly played the church's chicken commercial. therefore, even to this day, the chorus 'at church's we believe in the people's choice' plays in my head every now and again, at random moments having nothing to do with chicken.
two, in the commercial, isn't that the dude from seinfeld? he played the pakastani man that jerry accidentally had deported b/c he did give the man his visa renewal?

And I also remember to one and only McKenzie's Bakerey location in New Orleans that used to sell fried chicken.
