Oh gads....could u eat a test-tube burger?

TV chef Heston Blumenthal is set to serve up a £207,000 "test-tube" burger later this year.

A test-tube burger..... ill (runs to the toilet to be sick at the mere thought)

That first hamburger is going to cost 250,000 euros. I couldn't put that near my mouth if they gave me the 250,000 euro. I like the odd piece of meat but dear God the world has gone mad!!

It could turn out to be a great food source free of the environmental issues that plague the meat production industry, not to mention the ethical problems that come with factory production of meat. Scientific American ran a five page article on the possibility last summer that's available on line.

I for one would be happy to make the switch if it can ever be economically mass produced.

Oh my.

Though I consider myself old-fashioned, knowing the tiny bit I do know about what has happened to our food I'm not surprised.

In theory I am not opposed, but since farmed fish is not even good for you, I assume a test tube burger would not be quite the same as the real thing

so does it get to grow into a whole cow or does it just grow into a t-bone steak?

Doesn't the flavour of the meat depend on the diet the "animal" consumes? how will these cells become strong and tasty!

It's probably just like a generic beef cell growth

I bet it will taste just like McDonalds

first thing i thought about was lines from the movie:

Soylent Green

Det. Thorn: It's people. Soylent Green is made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for food. You've gotta tell them. You've gotta tell them!

( i don't want no test tube burgers barf )

There are issues with farmed fish like salmon, but ‘test-tube’ meat could actually be the solution to those problems – that’s exactly why it’s being pursued. Farmed salmon apparently have much higher levels of PCBs and other toxins (though from what I’ve read those levels are still within safety guidelines). My understanding is that the reason for that is the feed used during production: salmon are fed fish meal and oil.

Salmon farming also has other issues – the farming operations use up more fish flesh in feed than they produce, which results in pressure on wild fish populations (one of the things farming operations were meant to avoid). Plus you still need fishing fleets to catch the feed for the salmon, so the environmental impact from the oil used to run the fleets does not disappear either. And the waters around the sea cages can become polluted from the concentration of feces & food waste. And as we know, there are similar issues with beef, poultry and pig farming. And none of that gets into the ethical problems that come from penning up animals for the duration of their lives. I’m not a granola crunching earth first type, but surely it’s better to have a product that avoids inflicting misery if we can achieve it. These are the kinds of issues that cultured meat could lessen if it becomes feasible.

i'm hoping that cloned meat sources will someday eradicate the need for slaughtering animals.

Why not.

I bought a Bic Mac a few weeks ago for the first time in about 15 years. The only thing that had any taste on it were the pickles.
