Suggestions for Protein bars?

Or any other healthy mid-AM/mid-PM snacks?

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Most commercial protein bars don't have very much protein in them (they're basically candy bars with a little whey protein sprinkled in). And the ones that do have a fair amount of protein invariably a) taste bad and/or b) give you gas because of the kind of protein/sweetener they use.

Real food is always better. Try string cheese with fruit or veggies. Or cheese (or peanut butter) with whole grain crackers. Cottage cheese or whole yogurt is good, too.

Or make a protein filled shake by adding Milk, greek yougurt, and a scoop of protein powder... Get yourself one of these...

In the summer, I add fresh fruits... I hate winter fruit.. hrmph Soooo many possibilities!!

Yes! I have two of these, they do come in handy. nod It's just that sometimes I get bored drinking the shakes...but I can definitely try making my own to switch it up. Thanks for the suggestion thumbs up!

I do try to eat greek yogurt, but those things can get quite expensive. I'll try the whole grain crackers with cheese. Peanut butter is tricky for me, I tend to get addicted to it, so I have to watch the portion control with that.

Raw almonds!

I love the smell of almonds. It's one of my most favorite scents in the world. And with the protein and good fat a 100 calories serving keeps you "full" for a long time. You can buy hundred-calorie packs, but I prefer to buy in bulk or big containers and measure it out myself.

There are also recipes online for homemade protein bars, if you want to go that route. (So many of the commercial ones have questionable ingredients.) Jerky is also pretty easy to make at home.

I get these for the occassional midday munchies;

It's only 14g of protein, so it's not really a legitimate "Protein Bar", but it's a decent snack to stave off the munchies.

Only 5g of sugar but a whopping 80mg of sodium (lucky for me sodium isn't a issue). 205 calories but only 105 from fat.

It's very light, like one of those wafer-cookies, so it goes down easy and tastes great.

thumbs up!

Lately I've become addicted to these Trader Joe's 12 Grain Crackers. I dip them in Greek yogurt as a snack.

hmmm They most certainly look yummy, but will the sodium content hurt in regard to weight loss?

I don't know...I mean, when you sweat you naturally lose salt (which is why Gatorade includes it).

shrug

I would think that you'd probably just need to keep an eye on that if you're watching your sodium intake for high blood pressure or something.

But as for taste...these definitely are da bomb. nod They really taste JUST like those wafer cookies from when we were kids.

I make my own protein bars so I can mix up the flavours. Here's a good webite with some recipes for you to try. I linked one of my faves....chocolate! biggrin

I use soy protein instead of whey, and banana or pumpkin puree can substite in a pinch. smile

If you must go with a protein bar check how much protein and sugar is actually in it. I wouldn't take anything with more than 2g of sugar, which is hard to find, but I know sheetz sells a brand with little sugar, cuz I've gotten one there like that before. Also be careful of the 'sugar alcohol' content. I'm not even 100 percent sure what that is but it's prob a way of trying to disguise the sugar. Soooo go with the bar with the least amount of sugar most amount of protein.

I eat spoons full of peanut butter all day. Also almonds. Whey Protein shakes with a handful of berries in it. Wheat grass. I scramble myself up an egg quick for a snack/meal whatever. Also beans. Fill up on beans. They have the fiber and protein you need. And don't forget your veggies and whole grains.

In an ideal world (I do cheat) but when I'm being good I don't eat anything with more than 4g of sugar. Also, don't make the mistake of loading up on diet sodas (or any sugary drink) because it causes your body to crave sugar, and you'll be attacking the chocolate chips in your cupboard come 10pm, I promise.

Okay thanks for the tips. I actually do look at the sugar grams but wasn't sure of the limit, so thanks for your tip on that one as well as the sugar alcohol content because that not something I would normally look for on the nutrition label, but I will now.

Sodas I don't have to worry about because of the soda incident I had at 6 years old. I sipped gulps of a hot orange soda that had been sitting in the car. I basically puked it all up in the next 30 minutes. After that I haven't been a fan of sodas. lol But I do have a sweets problem. Some days I don't want anything sweet at all, other days I'm searching slightly bare cabinets for chocolate like a crackhead searching for a crumb of crack. lol

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
