Having a partner helps, that's why I would love a gym partner but when I mention the hours that I go, there's always an excuse from my friends..."oh that's too early (if on the weekends), I don't want to do weights and get all manly looking (then I have to drop some knowledge and let them know that weight lifting for women helps tone us faster, not make us look manly, we don't have testosterone rolleyes)" or they will agree to go then cancel at the last minute with some lame excuse. So right now I just roll to the gym by myself. Though I saw my neighbor this morning and she said that she's a member of the same gym that I'm a member of and would like to go workout together sometimes. So I'll have to see if she's really serious.

Where do so many women get this misinformation about weight-training?

Incorrect assumptions talking amongst one another and being closed minded. The minute I learned that doing an hour or more of cardio is basically wasting my time, I was actually happy. Fortunately for me, I love lifting weights and prefer to spend the bulk of my time at the gym doing strength training as oppose to spending a pointless hour of cardio and then leaving. I do know it's important to do some type of cardio activity but I only do 30 minutes of it at the most.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

As another orger pointed out in a previous fitness thread, you should do 80% weight-training/20% cardio.

OK...I cant reply to every single post (as much as I appreciate the feedback)...

...for me, I was going late at night (10-ish) with a buddy who's a legitimate gymrat. It was great cuz I was doing stuff I'd never do on my own, like benching and deadlifts. BUT, he likes to talk, and I'd be getting home at midnight, 1am, sometimes later. Not good when I need to wake up at 5:30am.

Lately I've been going right after work with another friend that I talked into joining my gym. But like others mentioned, the gym is PACKED at that time...which makes for good views on the treadmill wink but forget about getting anywhere near the free weights. I need to invest in some protein bars as well, 'cuz i get FAMISHED midway thru whatever I'm doing.

...btw...my buddy talked me into trying a Spin class today. HOLY FUCK! I didn't think it'd be that tough! I could barely keep up, and limped out of that effin' room!!!

Of course too much weight-lifting can make a woman look manly. You don't need testosterone for that.

I'm having a difficult time scheduling time in the gym. I prefer doing it first thing in the morning. Problem is, for some odd reason, my sugar drops really low after a morning workout and it takes me several hours to come out of that "fog". I eat breakfast before my workouts and usually have some type of snack or meal afterwards. Morning workouts exhausts me both physically and mentally.

When I go to the gym after work in the evenings, however, I usually end up VERY wired aftewards. I don't want to be wired at 8p at night! And I always end up waking up at 1a or 2a in the morning because my body temperature is usually elevated for several hours after a workout, therefore, causing me to wake up in the middle of the night! mad mad mad

I find the best time for me to workout without any of those side effects is mid-afternoon. But, I work during the week so I can't get to the gym at that time during the week. sad

No, and I didn't miss your friends' point either. They're worried about doing a lot of weights since it might make their bodies look more manly, which is a real possibility if you don't make sure you do it in moderation. I've seen lots of women who didn't realize it had gone "too far" until it was too late. Look at Demi Moore in Striptease for example. That's not a stripper body, it's a female bodybuilder body.

That of course doesn't mean women shouldn't do weights at all, but it does mean that I understand their concern.

Jedi, you should just work out at home, it is so much easier. My mom still uses her work out tapes from the '90s and they work just as well. They are called The Firm workouts and include aerobics and weight lifting and a total body workout : D. Maybe you can do it on your lunch break if you have time razz

I would devote a little more time to weight-training. For me, an hour of cardio is too much. The most I do is 15-20 minutes after I'm finished with the weights(four times a week). The NYSC in my Bronx neighborhood has a pool, which is perfect.

But everyone's body/goals are different. Is yur routine working for you?

You should be doing cardio every single day if your goal is weight loss. Strength training doesn't just build muscle but lengthens them and helps you burn calories, so I agree that it is an important element of health and fitness.

But cardio is absolutely necessary to lose weight.

Nah...I spent about 8 YEARS planning to "work out at home".

Just doesn't happen.

I even have a chin/pullup bar that goes over your doorway and some "perfect pushup" handles that my brother lent me.

Haven't TOUCHED them.

It's all about an external incentive for me...that someone waiting for me at the gym to get my lazy ass going!!!

Both are necessary to be healthy and happy too. smile Strong muscles, strong bones, strong heart.

As for me, I generally go after work on weekdays and I have a Saturday morning yoga class I like.

I'm considering starting doing cardio at my gym in my building in the mornings as I feel like my whole day is shot on days I visit the gym - work, gym, cook dinner, eat, wash up and then I have an hour or so before bed. I want to increase my exercise time without having to feel like I'm spending my life there. So I'll start cardio-ing at home weekdays before work and doing weights at the gym 2-3 days a week and keep my yoga class. That should do it.

I run 6 miles everyday... roughly an hour, if I dont run I do the elliptical for an hour, at 5 resistance, and above 210 strides a minute... I lift HARD 2 days of legs and 2 days of upper body.. usually mon& tues and thurs and fri...I take one day off a week.. I have stayed the same weight for 5ish years now and i pretty much eat anything I want... just watch portion control...... When im in marathon training I will loose about 5 or more pounds... As we age you loose something like 20% of your muscle mass omg Which leads to frail bodies, bad balance and weakness... Running is GREAT because the hard pounding causes your bones to become more dense which in turn helps us as we age as well...

I guess my point is do both things like Erin said... It is soooooo worth it in the end... My biggest fear is becoming frail...

For a great cardio workout, take kettlebell classes, folks. A vigorous 25-minute kettlebell workout does more for you than 40 minutes on the treadmill.
