Back in the day, I was the only Black in a Literacy class. The professor went on about how parents "in tha hood" don't read to their children... THEN she said, "Right, Lynn?" eek

We were sitting in a circle, so I looked around at my classmates and said, "How would I know? I grew up in suburbia with 2.2 kids and a dog." confused

EVERYONE was uncomfortable.

Afterward, I asked the prof why she assumed I was from the hood... No answer. rolleyes

I've heard dumbass comments like that from several teachers/professors over the years attending public school and college. It's ignorance, and what the teacher said to that student in 'smoothcriminal's' class was out of line as well. It wasn't necessary. Best thing to do is make a written complaint to their supervisors and make sure it is a written one. My fellow students and I reported our college professor for making 'many' comments like that directed at African-American students. It's pathetic that as educators that they feel they have to stoop that low to insult students they're supposed to be 'educating'.

I also see it just as bad when a teacher listens to a student make those type of remarks and doesn't say anything. I remember in my senior year of high school, I had flunked American History in the 11th grade so I had to repeat the class again during my senior year. Everyone in that class was 11th graders so none of them knew anything about me. Most of my classes had about four or five blacks in them but this particular class had none.

Anyway, it was during the election where Ronald Reagan was running for his second term against Walter Mondale. The teacher asked the class what they felt the qualifications should be for someone to run for president. One guy said he must be heterosexual. No one said anything. Then, the same guy said he cannot be married to a black person. The teacher did ask him why but she didn't question his response when he said because if he's married to a black person, he will think like "they" do and be for "them". That statement is not only saying that a black person should not even be able to be president, but it's also saying that a president must be for whites and for whites only. And the heterosexual qualification is just as ridiculous.

this won't be popular, but yes i think you might be overreacting just a bit. i doubt the teacher intended any slur, and is likely just ignorant or incompetent at certain aspects of life. if you decide to take it as a slur remember that is your choice. but then again, i really do not know how the thing was intended since i was not there.

Hey Andy! I agree. Also, in that last part of your statement, reminds me of when I was in 4th grade and my teacher told the class that 'Negroes cannot be President of this country." Her exact words. lol So I raised my hand and asked her "Why"" She walked over to me, looked me right in the face and said "Because Negroes were slaves". Of course I didn't believe that they could never be President, based on what she said, but it is amazing some of the 'questionable' comments over the years I've heard from teachers. So glad I didn't fall for that nonsense.lol (Sidenote: I was waiting for you to come over in this thread to say "Hi". wink

So I talked to her.

In a nutshell, she said she was so sorry that the girls called it the black movie and that she would shut it down next time.

She said that she loved The Help and that it was about emporing woman and woman's rights. She hinted that she made the connection of "oh hell no" to that movie becuase they said things like, "You be important," and "You be special."

Oh well. What can I say. I don't think she's racist. Definitely not. She just doesn't know.

I'm surprised she didn't tell you she once dated a black guy or has a black best friend or some BS like that lol I'm proud of you for speaking up, and even if she doesn't change overnight, she can consider it a learning experience....

It's not about intention, it's about ignorance and insensitivity. It was inappropriate, period. It should be addressed.

it sounds like it was addressed, and handled well. if every single person in the world decided to take offense at what was not intended to be offensive, this would be a sorry place indeed!

I agree.

However, I think that when you felt uncomfortable you should vent how it made you feel. Irrespective of other's opinion about the validity of your feelings. There's no need to be dramatic about it.

Just say you want to say something about the incident and ask her if she was aware that she offended you? Than tell her why it upset you.

In that way, there is no need for drama, and you can talk about it. Everybody can learn and be happy. If you don't, you will stay frustrated over it. Just get it out of the way, so you can proceed openminded with the Drama classes wink

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
