Can't believe no-ones mentioned Rita's death in Dexter.

I was scrolling along waiting to see this one! I was shocked! disbelief

I don't usually get sucked in2 stories but when Trinity got 2 Rita?! I was still ill 30 minutes later on, like a punch in the guts. That was a horrible shocker. Dexter is one of thee best things on tv. Funny story, my mate Jackie is obsessed wi Dexter & somehow came across a mannequin's hand at her work, which is odd cuz she works in an office. Anyhow, she took it home & painted the fingernails all different colours. She then stuck it in her fridge for her guy 2 find, with a note from the bay harbour butcher! It freaked him right out! Ha ha ha

I don't watch TV, but if it "would have happened" it would have hit head lines. Fonzi dies in a motorcycle accident, and all in the family's Archie bunker dies of aids.

Okay, I sorry to have crashed your topic.

Game of Thrones - the bloke who played 006 in Goldeneye, Sean Bean. Guess they couldn't afford him for the whole series or were they just following the book? Is there a book?

The whole cast of Blakes 7. Way to make sure it never saw a repeat!

Doctor Who. Any of 'em. Never saw that coming.

Another great one is "Macon County Line" or maybe it was "Return to Macon County" but I think it was "Macon County Line".

Anyway, these teens get in all kinds of trouble in Macon County, Georgia. I can't remember what they did, but the cops wanted them bad. They were going to kill the kids, as I recall.

The kids finally get away. All they have to do is cross the Macon County Line and they are home free. And there's the county line, right ahead!

They cross it! They are ecstatic with joy! So ecstatic that they forget to look both ways before crossing the train tracks just on the other side of the county line.

BOOM! As they are laughing with glee, they get smashed to smithereens by a train!

It was awesome.

Surely the most shocking ones would be the ones where the actor playing the character suddenly died. Nevermind the audience, those times even the writers of the show were taken by surprise!

I know there are plenty of examples of this, but I can't think of any good ones at the moment.

What makes a TV character death shocking is that you don't expect it. With today's mass media and 24/7 media, you already get the heads up on what actor is leaving a particular show, so you already know that the TV character will be killed off, so it takes the shock value out of it. TV character deaths like Dr Mark Greene (ER) and Detective Bobby Simone (NYPD Blue) weren't shocking, just heartbreaking. Back in the day, a TV character being "killed off" was due to an actual death of the actor themselves.

That's why Henry Blake's death on MASH was such a shock, historically because they were one of the first TV shows to "kill off" a TV character. So it's the most shocking death ever.

The Sopranos were loaded with surprising character deaths. I think the most shocking death of all of them was Ralphie, that was totally unexpected. Adriana death pissed me off, but it wasn't shocking, you already knew her fate. Christopher's death was bone chilling, but typical of the relationship between him and Tony. Bobby's death was shocking to me he was on of the few characters that I actually liked, and he beat the shit out of Tony, so he won brownie points from me.

Kareem Said was an unexpected death on Oz

Sylvia Costas and Andy Jr (although he wasn't a regular character) NYPD Blue

Sandy and Det Eddie Torres NY Undercover

Rex Van de Kamp Desparate Housewives

Omar Little The Wire

Tom Cruise's character dying on the train at the end of Collateral. He had it coming but it was still unexpected and a little sad. The man was just trying to do his job.

Jimmy Olsen on Smallville

Nate from Six Feet Under

Clive Owen in Children of Men
