This year's Super Bowl marks a digital first: The game will be the first Super Bowl that you can watch online -- legally. NBC, the broadcast partner for this year's game, is going to stream the game live.

NBC has actually been streaming some NFL games online since 2009, though never the Super Bowl. While it opens up the game to a whole new online audience, NBC sees it as a "second screen" experience -- a complement to the TV broadcast rather than an alternative.

Still, streaming an event as huge the Super Bowl (last year's broadcast had a record 111 million viewers) brings with it a whole different set of variables. What devices can you watch it on? What extras will the stream have? And most important -- will it have the ads? Read on for our comprehensive guide to watching Super Bowl XLVI online.

Basics

How can I access the stream? You can watch the Super Bowl live at NBCSports.com or at NFL.com. Both sites will have the entire thing, including pre-game coverage, which starts at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, Feb. 4. Kickoff isn't until 6:30 p.m.

What devices can I use to watch? That would be any laptop or desktop PC. Importantly, phones aren't supported, since Verizon has exclusive rights for streaming Super Bowl on mobile devices (more on that below). Tablets, including the iPad, aren't technically mobile, though, so the stream should work on those, via the devices' built-in web browser.

Can I access the stream from outside the U.S.? Not legitimately, no. Canadian fans who have mobile service through Bell Canada can watch the Super Bowl live via Bell's Mobile TV app.

Does it cost anything? Not a penny, although if you have any kind of data plan (i.e. if you were accessing via a 3G or 4G modem), data rates would apply.

Will I be able to embed the stream on my website? No.

The Ads

Will I be able to see the same ads as on TV? Not quite. The actual stream will have a different ad roll than the broadcast. However, NBC will make new commercials available through an "on-demand component" of the video player immediately after they air on TV.

As in years past, Hulu and YouTube will feature every national Super Bowl spot online.

How much do advertisers spend on the online ads? Although the broadcast ads command a whopping $3.5 million for a 30-second spot, the Web isn't quite so lucrative. NBC says each ad for the Super Bowl stream costs somewhere between the "high six figures" to the "low seven figures."

Where can I watch the ads after the game? With all the sharing that's bound to happen on Facebook, Twitter et al., where won't you? For comprehensive aggregating, though, you should check out YouTube's Ad Blitz and Hulu's AdZone. Additionally, NBC is hosting a Google+ Hangout the next day to dissect the ads.

Mobile

What's the deal with watching on my phone? Verizon is the exclusive NFL partner for mobile, and it's offering up the stream via the NFL Mobile Premium app. If you're a 4G LTE customer, that's free, but if you're on 3G it'll cost you -- you'll need to subscribe to Verizon Video ($10/month or $3/day). Obviously, you'll need a data plan.

Bell Canada customers can enjoy the Super Bowl live via Bell's Mobile TV app for phones and tablets. Mobile TV data plans are an additional $5 a month.

Is there anything different about the mobile stream? Yes! The mobile stream actually takes the TV feed -- not the online one -- so you'll see all the exact same ads that everyone watching the broadcast is seeing.

Just Verizon phones, though? Yep.

Extra Stuff

What's the resolution of the stream? The stream, based on Microsoft Silverlight, will have a maximum resolution of 720p, or the minimum to qualify as HD. However, if your connection can't handle that resolution, it will automatically "down-rez" itself into something you'll be able to see without buffering.

Will there be any features you can't get from the TV broadcast? Plenty. You'll have access to multiple camera angles, highlight clips, social-media updates, live statistics and DVR controls for your own instant replays.

What about 3D? Sorry, not this year.

What happens if the stream goes down? NBC says it's prepared for a much larger audience than its previous streams, but anything can happen. If the stream does go down, there's not much you can do except refresh and hope for the best.

Why is NBC doing this? NBC doesn't see an online stream as competing with its broadcast. Although it makes less money on ads shown online, it believes the stream is adding more eyeballs than it's taking away from its main broadcast. The network is treating the whole idea as a "second screen" experience, expecting most people watching the stream will also be watching the broadcast on a TV. We'll see how it pans out, but NBC is far from the first broadcaster to try and capitalize on the second screen phenomenon.

The Super Bowl is the pinnacle of all NFL football games. Not only does the outcome affect who will win the NFL title, it affects the legacy of the quarterbacks who play in the ultimate game. It made hall-of-famers out of quarterbacks like Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Len Dawson, Roger Staubach, Bob Griese, Terry Bradshaw, and Phil Simms, and it cemented the legacy of superstar hall-of-famers like Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, John Elway, Troy Aikman, and future hall-of-fame quarterbacks Brett Favre, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning.

However, losing the Super Bowl usually isn't kind to those quarterbacks who start the game yet fall short of the ultimarte prize. While some quarterbacks were worthy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame based on their excellent careers alone (Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly), most of the others quickly receded to become footnotes in Super Bowl history (Craig Morton, Billy Kilmer, David Woodley, Tony Eason, Stan Humphries).

While winning the Super Bowl often makes a legacy of the victorious quarterback, not all Super Bowl winning quarterbacks live up to the heights of greatness like the Hall of Fame Players mentioned earlier. In fact, some of them have coasted on their victories. So here's my list of the five wor....least heralded quarterbacks to ever win a Super Bowl.

5. Doug Williams (Washington Redskins) - Doug Williams was the first African American quarterback to see significant playing time in the NFL. While he actually had a decent career stats-wise, he toiled for several years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and while he led them to the playoffs in two of those seasons, the Bucs were not very good. He was eventually signed by the Washington Redskins as a backup to Jay Schroeder, but after Schroeder went down due to injury and ineffectiveness, he led the Redskins to Super Bowl XXII. However, he faced a lot of racial prejudice at the time, as a lot of coaches around the league thought that African American players weren't intelligent enough to play the quarterback position. Nevertheless, he answered his doubters by throwing four touchdown passes in the second quarter in an eventual rout of the Denver Broncos 45-10.

4. Jeff Hostetler (New York Giants) - Jeff Hostetler was drafted by the Giants in 1984 to back up Phil Simms, and for the first five seasons of his career he played sparingly. But after Phil Simms went down with a season-ending injury late in the 1990 season, Hostetler was pressed into action, winning the last two games of the regular season, a gutsy win in the NFC Championship game over the heavily favored San Francisco 49ers, and a huge win in Super Bowl XXV against the Buffalo Bills. After that Super Bowl, he played a few more seasons with the Giants but was plagued with injuries, and he finished his career with the Oakland Raiders, eventually earning a Pro Bowl berth in his stint there.

3. Brad Johnson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) - Brad Johnson was a journeyman quarterback during his career in the NFL, playing for the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Dallas Cowboys. He spent the bulk of his career with the Vikings, but it was injury plagued, and he was unseated at his position by Randall Cunningham. He then went to the Redskins and earned a Pro Bowl berth before landing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Johnson had good stats during his Super Bowl winning season with the Bucs, the team itself rode its way to victory in Super Bowl XXXVII thanks to a league-leading defense.

2. Mark Rypien (Washington Redskins) - Mark Rypen was drafted by the Redskins in 1986 but spent most of his career there on the bench or in injured reserve. After Doug Williams left the team and Jay Schroeder was traded to the Los Angeles Raiders, he became the starter in 1990. His first season was unremarkable, but in 1991 he had a career year, throwing for over 3,500 yards and 28 touchdowns, eventually earning the MVP award and leading the Redskins to victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI, where he was named MVP of the game. However, injuries would hamper his remaining years, and he finished his career as a backup with the St. Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts.

1. Trent Dilfer (Baltimore Ravens) - Trent Dilfer was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1994 in the first round and was expected to bring the Bucs to greatness. While he did earn a Pro Bowl berth in 1996, his play on the field actually began declining late in that season, and he statistically got more unremarkable in later seasons. In he signed with the Baltimore Ravens to back up Tony Banks, but after the Ravens failed to score an offensive touchdown in four games he was elevated to the starting QB position. Nevertheless, he didn't significantly improve the offense in his play there, but he limited his fumbles and interceptions, thereby managing the games and allowing the Ravens ferocious defense to carry the team to the Super Bowl. He would win Super Bowl XXXV thanks to that same ferocious defense, the most crushing defense in the NFL since the 1985 Chicago Bears. He would bopunce around to the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers before retiring in 2008 and becoming an ESPN analyst.

As a Raider fan who is still holding a grudge over the " tuck " rule, I'm elated that NY won, that evil empire in Mass deserves nothing for another twenty years. Right on GIANTS, get wild in Times Square.

Wow, haven't won a Super Bowel since Spygate.

Giants were 7-7, heading nowhere, until the Victor Cruz TD against the Jets. That ONE play turned the season around. Then they beat Dallas twice, and took down Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Alex Smith and Tom Brady again.

What a season!

I saw that!!! They all looked GOOD, but Adrien was particularly fly!

My fav commercial was the Doritos commercial where the dog killed the cat and bribed the male owner with a bag of Doritos. (I love cats, but this was funny).
