I say "girlfriend" but that really doesn't quite seem right for someone I've been with for 14 years.

People in this area say "partner" a lot. It may have originated in the gay community, but it sums it up a little better. But it also always made me think "sex partner" when I heard it, even though "life partner" was I think more what was intended.

Anyway I've grown comfortable with being referred to as having a "partner" though I don't usually describe my girlfriend that way.

Partner makes sense.

If someone says partner I think they are committed. Very seldom is that word used after only a few months.

There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Hun, I was joking. You're human too and you need love just as much as you need cock up your throat. Maybe even more. I think that's good. Don't let it get you down.

I'm just a little sensitive right now.

And it's down my throat...not up. It's down the throat, up the ass.

Dayum! This thread exploded!!!

Dave is a young and idealistic individual. He hates it when I say that, but a fact is a fact.

"Labels" are not meant to "restrict" anything, they are meant to provide distinction.

I have many "friends", but I am not romantically involved with them. That is why they are my friends.

I had a "wife". I shared my life with her exclusively. I no longer do so, and therefore, she is no longer my "wife".

See how easy that was? No confusion. No vagueness. No ambiguity.

Dave...face the facts...be honest man. You are young and want to play. That is fine. Be honest about it. When you meet a young woman and there's a mutual attraction, you can remain "friends" (with or without benefits) or you can take the next step and prove to HER and to the rest of the world that you wish to be committed and call her your "girlfriend". Doesn't change who you are, doesn't change you relationship, just shows that you are serious about her. That's the only "restriction" which the term applies to you.

Of course I'm an idealistic indivudal. Makes me at least half human!

Of course I will change and maybe one day call someone my "girlfriend". Right now I can honestly say that I do not feel the need to "leave open doors" or whatever, but it might be true that I am a tad bit afraid of commitment overall. Doesn't mean I am an asshole or less honest. Actually, I think that's the most honest I can be...

And, yeah, you're right, it's all clear and not ambiguous. But I like this little bits of individual mystery and confusion in life - keeps things interesting. smile

All great responses, even Dave1992. I suppose at some point we've all been where you are?

Anyway thanks for the responses.

It seems my computer has caught a virus and is barely moving. I'll have to take it to the Geeks.

I'll catch you all down the road.

Peace
