Man buns are all the rage

Org, you know what to do.

Hairy Hipsters: Man Buns Are All The Rage, Says Paper Of Record

Next time you see a guy wearing his hair in a bun, you can thank the NY Times for being on top of this trend. Because there's a feature on the proliferation of this new 'do: "In certain arty neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Bushwick, some men are twisting their long hair into a form more famously worn by librarians, schoolmarms and Katharine Hepburn. But don’t call the male version an up-do or a chignon. Call it a man bun."

Of course, Gawker points out that just three guys from Brooklyn ("the white part") seem to be the local early adopters (alongside tennis players Alexandr Dolgopolov and Xavier Malisse and Top Chef contestant Chris Jones). But this hairstyle was examined by a blog far from the gentrified streets of Brooklyn, the Red Dirt Chronicles in March of 2011:

I somewhat accidentally discovered the continual twisting of a pony tail will eventually roll up into a bun. And double-wrap a hair band around said bun and it is almost like a temporary shearing. Amazing! And, it fits around the inside straps of a hard hat. Tremendous!

But here’s the deal. Not since the time of the Samurai have hair buns been cool when worn by men. However, being the trendsetter that I’ve never been, I don’t mind stepping out there in an effort to - as in the days of the great sworded, martial arts warriors of old - make hair buns cool for men.

So, here is where I need your help. I need a cool name for the “man-bun” because man-bun just is not going to cut it, so to speak. So keep it clean and send your suggestions on a cool name for the man-bun. Help me make this thing as respectable as possible, okay?

Red Dirt readers suggested chump stump, man-gnon, knump (knot+lump), ninja knot, and bro non. Question: How does a bro non look with a fixie?

I did rock a mullet in college, so maybe I shouldn't be too quick to judge. But that's never stopped me before, so why start now...

My mom used to wear her hair like that a long time ago and I hated it lol.

My boyfriend has dreads and he as well as many other people who do often wears his hair like that shrug. So for me it's neither new nor a deal-breaker.

And IMO that hairstyle also looks okay on the first guy who is pictured in the article while I don't like it on the second guy.

Not something I'd like to see on most dudes, but if a guy has the personality to pull if off, I dont mind.

I actually think it looks cool on dudes with dreads...

It certainly helps that this guy is smokin' hot. He could get away with a lot of things.

But is that really a bun? If it is, I would certainly be okay with that.

Honestly?

I've always loved it it when guys have long hair - especially if it's long enough to gather in a ponytail. On the right guy, a bun would be really hot to me.

Emphasis on 'the right guy' ie a 'pretty' guy.

By 'pretty' guy I mean someone who looks like this :

Not feelin' the "man bun" at all. I do not like long hair on guys; no matter how clean it is, it always seems greasy to me.

Those are called spools. When the Buddha was still a prince he had spools. Elongated earlobes are one of the characteristics that indicate the Buddha (in art). In my early 20s I wanted spools. In retrospect, I have to say I'm glad I didn't get them.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Since when? Out here those piercings are called gauges.

I feel like, the exact opposite of you about long hair - in fact it's almost more like I just tolerate short hair on guys. I definitely prefer some length although I'm fully aware that a lot of guys would look silly as fuck with longer hair.

Thise are the ones I'm usually not attracted to in the first place though. lol

That's the way my boyfriend wears his dreads too sometimes. I prefer it when he wears them in a

different way, but he looks okay wearing them like that as well. Next time I see him I need to take better photos that show the hairstyle, I just found few where he has the hair in that way lol.

I found another one even though the hair looks a bit "messy" on that one lol.Like I said not my favourite hairstyle on him, but certainly not a deal-breaker wink.

Since forever? I don't know... lol All I know is I've always heard them referred to as spools - from the piercing shop I use to go to in Chicago to my graduate school classes on Buddhist art. There are probably a few different terms that could refer to this; you know, like "pop" and "soda" both refer to the same type of beverage but in different regions. shrug

This was just in our local paper:

The Case Against Stretching Earlobes

Plastic surgeons are trimming extended earlobes as people look to distance themselves from their youthful fashion statements.

Man buns have long been a style here, at least for a handful of men who have long hair, are kind of arty/hipstery and do things like shop at co-ops and practice yoga. It's certainly not ubiquitous, but it's not completely unknown either.

But then, we're also known for being super hipster-y. shrug

Man buns are common here, because a lot of men tend to wear their hair long in Buenos Aires.

I'm ambivalent about it.
