The slide sucks now. It's only six feet tall and made of plastic or fiberglass, instead of 15 feet tall and made of scalding hot metal. See also: Kids today are pussies. disbelief

Its the parents that are pussies. I dont know what happened. Did they fall down too much during their childhood.

I do remember those hot metal slides. On a hot summer day with shorts on it would take a few minutes before u could sit down on it.

What worked best if you had shorts on was to tuck in your shirt and slide down on your back. That way, if you didn't get your feet down fast enough at the bottom, you'd land on your ass in the dirt. lol

I had a metal slide when I was little. I used to play with earthworms a lot as a child and my mum often found all these dried up, crusty worms stuck on the slide. I thought they'd like it.

I used to do that too! I tried telling that to my niece when I was pushing her on a swing set last year and got disapproving looks from my brother and his wife.

And the thing is...most swings now have landing areas that are cushioned in one way or another. When we were kids, we were flinging ourselves off the swings onto concrete or hard-packed dirt.

lol

I so agree!

We had loads of fun on these when I was younger [img:$uid]http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ3V1jD6coeSdR8eWSPbaj5ahQ8UDEILEDbKeCf1OZDMspZIA8-_w[/img:$uid]

And then there was a big story about someone climbing up to the top and badly mutilating their hand in the top part. Next thing they were all taken down and replaced with crap.

Hahaha. Does it sound a bit odd if I actually want to try this next time I visit a playground.

I used to do the same thing just with snails (with shells).

OMG - the bell! woot!

In the tiny Wisconsin town where my grandparents lived, there was an awesome Fireman's Park with the bell (shown in your photo), the boat (a plank swing) and other old-timey playground equipment. We kids loved it.

It's all gone, now - replaced by "safe" stuff. disbelief

I agree, kids are made into pussies these days.

I've fallen out of trees, jumped off buildings into piles of sand. Fallen off swings, bruised every part of my body. Nearly lost the tip of my thumb. Shattered the bones in two of my fingers. But boy, did I have an awsome childhood!

Wasn't it fun? You could be gone for hours without your mom freaking out that you'd been snatched. And if you got hurt...well...it was usually in the pursuit of something totally awesome.

We were four girls in my family, but there were still broken toes, sprained wrists and the like. Once, my sister hit the diving board doing a back somersault during warm-ups before a meet. I mean...she actually scraped her face down the board - even got green paint on her teeth. She was only 9, but she pulled herself together and competed. (I don't remember whether she won or not, but she probably did - she was very good.) In fact, three of the four of us had serious encounters with diving boards. (I hit twice in one week.)

We treated our wounds like badges of honor - and still talk about them today. And the fun we had getting them!

biggrin ^
Diving boards.. don't get me started. I must have scraped so much skin off my body on those.

But fuck it, the higher, the better. And yes it hurt, but that never stopped me.

I read an article somewhere (can't find it now) that was stating that today's ultra-safe playgrounds are actually detrimental to our children because they don't develop "caution" skills. Or something like that (I don't know if I'm saying it properly).
