computer help ....

No idea how .. but it looks like my "work" computer has a bug .

i rarely use this computer for anything other than work , so not sure how it could have picked up something but here are the symptoms ... it is a lap top and it is supposed to have McAfee ...

however I just noticed that the "antivirus" thing that pops up is a "2012 antivirus windows " thing that isnt MCAFEE and says .... "you computer is infected" and wants me to purchase sometthing ...

which of course .... i did not ....

here is the deal . i hate this computer ! i am quitting my job in days ... but i would like to use it for a few days lol ... so wondering if there is any "online scan" i can do .... if it lets me go to a site .... and check out something ..... see if i cant self fix it .. just for 5 days ! lol ....

I know there are some good computer people on the org ....

Download.com has Spybot Search & Destroy, which I'm pretty sure will catch what you have.

i did download the malwarebytes .... it detected stuff and then wanted 29.99 , which i wasnt willing to spend ! lol

it was a work computer and i was quitting jan 3 . so F that . if i was staying and it would have guaranteed fix it , i would have definately paid it ....

i am very careful with that computer ... i never go to any odd sites , that is what is troubling about this episode ... the only thing i can think of is that I had some emails from my comcast acct , which i did forward ONE to my work computer which was essentially a job application that I wanted to fill out and print out on my work printer ... and perhaps somehow the comcast acct virus moved over to the work email ? there was no attachment that really was opened so i am clueless . i dont get how a computer with virus scanning and all that security crap ... gets messed up just with what I was doing ...

i swear i should shift to Apple .

OK, I love the fact that my knowledge allows me to help someone like you - have you tried Linux?

You can get a "desktop" LIVE cd from Ubuntu.com (if you don't know whether your computer is 32 or 64 bit, get the 32bit version).

LIVE Cd means that you don't have to install anything, clck "Try" when it boots. (note that booting from it means that you DONT get into Windoze, but use it instead).

That will allow you to run that computer, but as far as accessing *files* on it goes - are they Word documents or something? If they are, formats like Word and Excel, PDF will open - EXPERIMENTALLY!, ie. everything may not look the same as MS. (the formats are not compatible).

But importantly, you can actually get AT your files, and copy them to a USB stick, which, I think, was your original intention.....?

OK - I've tried to make it as simple as I can for a non-techie. Tell me how it goes smile

I had this same virus. I think I finally got rid of it, but now I have a Google redirect virus as well. I am struggling to get everything solved. Whoever created these viruses should burn in hell.

Anyway, the site Bleeping Computer has some useful information for dealing with this.
