Was anyone into any Sweet Valley books growing up?

I loved Twins and the Unicorn Club best, thuogh I started with some of the 'Kids' series. I only read High occasionally. I was into the Baby Sitters club more.

I was. I even read the "Sweet Valley University" books and some of the other spin-off series.

I used to watch the tv show too and can probably still sing the song from the opening credits.

I don't think the show aired here unless you had satellite, though there was buzz about it from the books being very popular. I managed to watch a little bit on youtube though, and the acting was horrible! lol Even worse than the Baby Sitters Club series though those videos are cute and I still have some of them, though scattered around the house.

Is it true Elizabeth ended up becoming a janitor in the end after all those dreams about being a writer?

One of the twins had a boyfriend called Bruce Patman. In high school we convinced our cooking teacher that there was a new student in our class called Bruce Patman midway through the year and when she did roll call one of the boys would say present and she never looked up fast enough to see who said it. We also locked her into the walk-in pantry for an entire period but that's another story!

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always joke about Bruce Patman, how could Jessica date him after he creeped on Elizabeth so many times? I would have thought he would get with Lila Fowler, but they would be too busy arguing over who has more money

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I started out on the Babysitter's Club, which I adored. I slowly started getting into the Sweet Valley Twins. And then middle school came and I was all about Sweet Valley High which was like 6th grade smut.

I remember a friend and I used to argue about the name Lila. I said it was pronounced "Lie-la" and she said it was pronounced "Lil-la". rolleyes

Shake it til ya make it dancing jig

I still don't know how it's pronounced either, Lila flows better

I read and collected Baby Sitters Little Sister and Baby Sitters club from 3rd grade to early 7th grade. After that I stopped buying them and was into buying CD's instead and going out of my way to hear music instead of what other people played. But I would reread the books about situations around friendship and dating more than I did when I was younger and less about the babysitting except for the good plots. Looking back, the Schafer/Spier drama was soooo entertaining though I would really get mad at Dawn sometimes lol

I read my first Sweet Valley High book in 4th grade, it was Miss Teen Sweet Valley, and that time I sided with Jessica, but now I totally relate to Elizabeth and why she was pissed off. Then I read another where Elizabeth got amnesia and Bruce Patman was about to take advantage of her before her memory came back, how could her sister marry that loser? I just learned of this today

The Sweet Valley Saga one with Jessamyn (shittiest name ever) and the twin that died and the Nazi resistance-fighter plotline? lol

I feel weird admitting this, but I actually still have that book. boxed

Alphastreet - I read Babysitter's Club too on a somewhat regular basis but could never get into them the way I could SVH.

I was big on R.L. Stine books too. Not really the "Goosebumps" series, although I did read those, but the horror books he wrote for teens, those little paperbacks with the great cover art. Christopher Pike was in the same vein but I tried his stuff and got scared away from it - it was too racy for me back then lol.

I was into Goosebumps for quite awhile too, but didn't end up having a huge collection, maybe no more than a couple of dozen, that's not very big for me, if I liked a series that much, I had to have every book lol

I did a wiki search and learned what happened at the end of Sweet Valley in a book that was published only last year and HOLY SHIT!

What!!!!?????

Steven just discovered he's gay

Elizabeth lives in New York working for a magazine, and is mad Jessica and Todd had an affair and stopped speaking to them

Winston Egbert was deserted by everyone, only thinks about money and "accidentally" fell off a 20 storey balcony and died sad

Bruce Patman's parents died, he's invested in a dot.com company, this all made him 'caring and sensitive' now.

Jessica works for a cosmetics company and is very successful, still in Sweet Valley

When Elizabeth went to Sweet Valley for her grandma's party, the twins fought, the mom got mad, then Elizabeth learned she had to let go of Todd and was already over him and forgave Jessica

Jessica married Todd and Elizabeth married....Bruce Patman! Who would've thought! UGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

...The hell?! eek

Is the original author even still writing them or is someone else? Because it sounds like they basically broke all the rules of the series...

I think francine pascal broke her own rules. Ghost writers always wrote the books, she only created the series

Bruce Patman's parents died, he's invested in a dot.com company, this all made him 'caring and sensitive' now.

I know, I was only casually into "Goosebumps" too - it was too 'kiddy' for me which is understandable because I don't really think it was intended for my demographic anyway, but for young children. I'm pretty sure I was in my early teens at the youngest when those first started coming out.

Like I said before, I was more into his "Fear Street" series (I'd forgotten the actual name and had to Google it). Those were written more for my age group. I actually used to own the book on the left in this pic, "Lights Out", and loved it :

Or seeing your sister marry your childhood best friend of two decades, ugh! And Jessica's crush who creeped on Elizabeth many times marry her in the end.

I think people my age in the mid 90's were reading R.L. Stine's non Goosebumps books, but I was just discovering it, and was into them for about a year. Night of the Living Dummy, The Haunted Mask and Piano Lessons Can Be Murder were my favourites. I wasn't rushing to move on from my kiddy side yet.

I wasn't in a rush either, in most respects I was actually like someone younger and preferred it, but usually when it came to my reading content I was always reading things either exactly for my age range or older because I would get really bored and frustrated with anything younger than that, really fast. When I was in elementary school I got frustrated with some of the school textbooks and after devouring them I started to read my mother's lol . I did check out the Goosebumps books - primarily because I'd heard so much about them and had seen them everywhere and even my younger siblings started bringing them home. They weren't bad, and I even read a few more, but it wasn't long before I moved on.

These from the Fear Street Series were actually really good :

As far as the Sweet Valley High books go - the one TotalANXiousNESS mentioned is worth reading - "Sweet Valley Saga". It's totally over the top and has some really eyeroll-worthy moments, but honestly anyone who ever loved the series will love it. Here's my copy (albeit raggedy as fuck with some of the artwork torn out lol ).

Oooh the Christmas books look creepy, I almost want to read them now, no matter how old I've gotten lol

I had a kiddy side, but I also dressed well for my age and people used to think I dress up too much for school and labeled me unfairly or made assumptions that I was trying to get guys attention though I didn't like any at that school at all. By 5th/6th grade, I thought it was childish to wear sweatpants to school unless it was for gym class and I would be dressed well anyways for years with nice jeans and cordoroy pants of that time. So I had a mature side and immature side balanced out.

They were pretty damn good books for that age level in that genre. I think there's a cheerleader sub-series in the Fear Street series too, I can't remember if I read them but I remember other kids raving about them.

...No one else tried out the "Sweet Valley University" books?
