I never said that I was copying CDs -- It was just a question because the law does seem unclear.

I believe you're allowed to backup your copies, for yourself. At least, that was the argument back when CDRs became affordable.

You can make a backup, but you can't use it while you have the source.

well you're wrong, so don't use such a blanket statement.

it's legal to copy for criticism, instruction, sales, etc.
