Why Prometheus Matters
WWhen I was about 8 (or 9), my father moved my family to Hunstville Alabama to be close to the NASA based company up that way. We lived out of a hotel room while our house was being prepped for us for damned near a month.
While stuck in that hotel, my pops tuned into HBO, at that time a newly launched cable network (there was only one HBO at that time). The things I got to see that month changed my damned life. Bo Dereck's big 'ole titties in Tarzan the Apeman, Christopher Atkin's bits n' pieces in The Blue Lagoon, and of course Alien, the classic sci-fi movie that launched the career of my favorite actress of all time, Sigeurney Weaver (just because she's my favorite doesn't mean I can spell her name, ok?).
You know that feeling you used to get before clicking a thread by spats, mirrorsbestfriend or 2the9s? That knot in your stomach that really should serve as some ominous sign, which of course you naturally disregard, because you simply can't resist clicking on their threads. I mean, you don't read a thread by spats--you rubberneck a thread by spats.
Anyways, that's what Alien was for me.....absolutely horrifying. Essentially, Scott filmed a huanted house movie in deep space, with very little character development, and managed pull off a masterpiece with this movie. I checked under my bed for an entire year hoping that alien wouldn't get me. I was horrified by that movie.
6 years later, James Cameron delivered a superb sequel, if not at the same level of brillians as the original. My main beef with the sequel was that it was less scary than the first. It was....well, a different kind of movie. Cameron admitted that he didn't want to copy the formula of the original, which I think is great. But the movie really just ended up being Rambo in space.
Next, came Alien3, the debut for David Fincher as a director. There was not a single scene in the movie that scared me. Plus, it was very hard for me to sympathize with double-y chromo serial killers, child molesters, and rapists. To top it off, everyone looked the same in that movie.
Then of course came Alien 4, which doesn't require a review--it's a hollywood thriller--nothing more and nothing less.
The main problem that I had with all of the sequels to the original is that they didn't answer anything for me. The Queen in the Aliens, introduce in grand fashion as she was, still did little to satisfy my curiosity.
Who was the space jockey in that movie? Where did he come from? Why is his ship laden with thousands of eggs if there were no hosts to carry them? Where was he originally headed? Why was a distress signal sent out in the middle of nowhere and a barren planet that would have otherwise never been visited? And why was the alien so precious? The brief explanation that it was meant for the bioweapons division did little to satisfy my curiousity. What entities were at war that required such interest in the xenomorph?
The list just went on and on, but none of the sequels did much to quell my burning desire to know these answers.
Now....There's Prometheus.
It's a project wrapped up and completely shrouded in secrecy, but what little we do know has already made me realize that this may be this decade's Blade Runner to me. We'll meet the SpaceJockey. We'll see aliens in their oriignal state (not morphed with human DNA like all the ones we're familiar with (Except Alien3 of course). We'll see the universe that Alien takes place in with greater clarity and with a more expansive vision.
....and, as Scott says, it'll scare the shit out of us....
Prometheus is probably the film I've mosted anticipated in about 10 years. Imma fart. | |

Dude, calm down. No matter how hard you wish, Michael Fassbender isn't doing full frontal in this flick. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Anyway I read about this the other day. I have a feeling that the movie is gonna have great CGI but a mediocre plot, but who knows. The trailer certainly looks impressive!
