I'm rubbish at comforting people. Really.

Was he young? Was he unwell before he died? What is running through your mind to worry you like this?

In November a friend died. Not someone I knew really well, but the wife of one of my husbands best friends. We only went to their wedding last year and she was only in her mid-30's. Her death was comepetely sudden and the knock-on effect has been huge.

That's what I would suggest as well.

Kimrachell is right, sudden onset of anxiety...see your doctor.

I'm firmly planted in denial

sad

Talk to your circle of friends about it. People who also knew him.... I think it will help you get your head around it.

I'm sorry, that's really all I have.

I had to go to the emergency room this summer because of two sudden deaths. The doctor told me it was anxiety, and prescribed some anxiety pills. To be frank, I didn't take them. So far, my daughter and my family has been my support, and I find things to do to occupy my time, instead of thinking about death. Also, my brother-in-law's mother and sister passed this summer as well within the same week.

Go to the doctor. They will probably prescribe you Xanex. Those things are like little miracles in a bottle. biggrin

With all due respect this is not the place to get the help you need. There are so many resources for professional
Counseling. If I'm not mistaken you're a student. Your campus has an office with good qualified professionals. Take advantage of it.

From someone who has experience this, you have to face your fear of death and accept that this is a natural part of life and its a passage we all have to take. You can not stop death, you will die and you won't really know it when you die. What comfort me was my relationship with God and that He will be there and is the only one who knows when I bow out of this world and pass to the life after. So... my advice is when you have a panic attack, close your eyes and think about a moment or a song anything that brought you joy in your life, if you think about the panic attack it will become worse so even if its terrifying start singing a song or something to help you. Imagine something, and then when the thought of death comes up, you have to realize that death comes when you don't expect it and its only your thoughts that are convincing you you're going to die. tell yourself, I'm not going to die even if your heart is screaming you're gonna die!!! Due to panic disorder, I have a heart arrythmia now but if I knew then what I know now, thats what I would be saying to myself. And of course, seek some help with it and journal, that always helps.

If you can feel them coming on (and a lot of people can after they've had a few bad ones), learn how to breathe properly. You need to take short, even, shallow breaths - not deep, dramatic, sighing, long ones. The latter makes it worse, the former is the only thing that ever helped me.

I've received treatment from a professional in the past From Both my Campus doctor and primary physician. It works but only temporary.

Sometimes a simple chat on the web does wonders..for me at least.

Im talking to an orger on Facebook and im starting to feel alittle more calm.

I have been doing this for the past couple days. Im starting to calm down alittle but know my head is pounding. I didnt know short breathing help i thought it made it worse.

I tried drinking beer to calm down but it didn't work.

I know how you feel. And I know it is not effective to just tell yourself how irrational it is. Or hear others tell you how irrational it is. That doesnt work. It's some sort of a chemical reaction.

What works for me is stepping away. I go visit people I know that do a lot of great and selfless work. And when I go visit them, I feel a great warth in humanity. It triggers something in me and helps me put things in perspective. My anxieties and worries disappear. Do something for others is

the best thing I think of.

And stay away from the internet. As I type this I think I should take my own advice.

Not short like, short and fast panicked breathing. Just a comfortable, consistent, in and out - maybe a little more shallow than your regular breathing. The reason for this is so you're actually focusing on your breathing instead of the panicked feelings.

Now, it may not work for you, but it did wonders for me and a couple of other friends who have had anxiety problems over the years. But for me it related to the feeling coming on. I had attacks that were so bad I was unable to do anything but sit in a chair or lay on the floor with my eyes closed and sweat. However, I could feel them coming on sometimes HOURS before they hit that hard. Eventually I found that if I got hold of my breathing I could stop them from happening AND make them go away after they'd started.

In fact, for me, taking those really deep breaths followed by a long exhale actually made it worse, sometimes instantly triggering an attack.

Nothing you do is wrong or right, though, so long as it makes you feel better. If something works, do it - if it doesn't, don't. It's important that whatever you do is comfortable for you.
