Design for Korean towers evokes exploding WTC on 9/11

Architects MVRDV apologize, say it wasn’t intentional

Father of firefighter killed in attack calls it a 'cheap way to get publicity'

MVRDV Towers in Korea that resemble the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attack.

An architecture firm said Friday it “regrets” a bizarre design for two high-rises in Korea reminds people of the twin towers exploding on 9/11.

A mockup shows two soaring skyscrapers connected in the middle by a “pixelated cloud” that evoked the clouds of debris that erupted from the iconic World Trade Center towers after terrorists flew planes into them.

“What the hell were these architects thinking?” asked the headline on a Gizmodo article about the plans for the Seoul apartment buildings.

MVRDV, which is based in the Netherlands, insisted in a statement that it didn’t notice the uncanny similarity that struck many observers instantly.

“MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud project evokes regarding 9/11,” it wrote on its website.

“It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt.”

Jim Riches, a retired FDNY deputy chief whose son was killed on 9/11, said he didn’t believe the architects.

“I think it’s a total lie and they have no respect for the people who died that day,” he said. “They’re crossing a line.

“It looks just like the towers imploding,” he said. “I think they’re trying to sensationalize it. It’s a cheap way to get publicity.”

Despite their regrets, the architects did not indicate any plans to alter the design of the buildings — one 850 feet tall, the other 970 feet tall — which are expected to be finished by 2015.

In an ironic twist, the towers will be at the entrance of the Yongsan Dreamhub project, which was designed by Daniel Libeskind, who created the master plan of the rebuilt World Trade Center.

Uhhh, I didn't see the resemblance at all until I read the included text. I'm still not sure I see it. Why would somebody want to build something that looked like the WTC exploding, collapsing, or whatever? Not like it would be popular, or attract costumers/clients. shrug

Clearly it's not exactly the same, but I can't NOT see it.

Why feel guilty?

One can argue that ANY skyscraper evokes memories of 9/11.

So do commercial aircraft but no one is saying stop flying the type of plane that was used in the 9/11 attacks because they are evocative of the attacks.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Yes. And your point?

lol

Yeah to me it does look like 2 tall buildings exploding in the middle. I don't know if they're purposely being insensative to 9/11 or not, I'll take they're word they meant no harm, but I can see where someone would get that impression.

My point is that many Americans will say "How the hell could those architects NOT know this looks like 9/11 exploding?????" because they think America is the center of the universe and that "9/11 was The Day The World Changed For EVERYBODY." (It didn't.)

When I read about all the planning that went into it, why those features are shaped like that and what they did with it; and juxtapose it with photos of the WTC towers falling, I come to two conclusions:

1. The architects did not intentionally design towers that resemble the destruction of two towers in New York;

2. If you look at the photos of the actual tower explosions, they're nowhere near where the "exploding" features of the Korean building are. It just doesn't look close enough to look like it's modeled on the first one.

It's what you make it.

I got your point, thought it was funny, I laughed.

Visually without all the research it still looks like 2 tall buildings next to each other exploding in the middle, some people are going to see 9/11, especially those that were personally affected, it's a part of their consciousness. The architects didn't have that kind of foresight, they were trying to do something else. I get it, but it still looks like buildings exploding.

I totally agree.

I think people who get triggered and upset by it have every reason to, and should be treated with compassion.

I don't see the collapse of the towers in it, I see the explosion from that second plane hitting.

I know it's not quite the same, but that is what I see.
