What a great character actor. Between M*A*S*H and Dragnet, he had the 60's and 70's covered.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. He had a pretty illustrious movie career before he moved into television. He was in The Ox-Bow Incident, Madame Bovary, Dragonwyck, State Fair (the 1945 version), All My Sons, Holiday Affair, High Noon and The Glenn Miller Story, among many, many others.

Yerp. nod

But I totally thought he was dead, like, many years ago. Was sure of it, actually. Even had a conversation about it while watching a MASH retrospective on TV Land.

RIP

Actually, Harry Morgan had an earlier role on M*A*S*H, as the eccentric General Steele. I forgot what season it was.

RIP.

Oh that's right! I looked it up on imdb, and it was the first episode of Season 3: The General Flipped at Dawn.

"The Ox-Bow Incident" is one of my favorite movies, so tragic. But I too thought Harry Morgan died years ago. Even when I read the title of this thread I thought "What are they talking about?". What a long life he had then, may he be resting peacefully. He was one of the greats.

MASH had an incredible knack of replacing old characters with equally good, if not better ones. COl Blake to Col Potter, Trapper to BJ, and Frank Burns to Charles Winchester. They always went from the more cartoonish to the more real.

I guess a lot of people did not like how MASH got more serious, but I think those characters were improvements.

The only failing on their part was giving Klinger a larger role in the later episodes. Sorry Jaime Farr, you were a great bit player!

Everything you mention is cause Alan Alda was able to get his voice and ideas to become part of
M*A*S*H. Granted the show went on bout 2 years longer than it should.

Hadn't heard about Harry in a long time, but I was very sad to learn of his death. MASH was a favorite show of mine. Didn't miss an episode back in the day. He lived a long life and I hope it was a happy, fulfilling one.
