A Second Person's Face Catches Fire During Surgery Another person's face has caught fire during surgery, the second in less than a week. Tommy Beams was undergoing an operation at Grays Hospital in Seattle Washington, when his face was accidentally set on fire by the surgical team. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center with second degree burns. Beams recounted his traumatic experience on television, speaking of looking at himself in the mirror for the first time with extensive burns and becoming distressed. He also stated, "The physical pain is tremendous." It is widely accepted the presence of a cauterizing tool (heat/flame), isopropyl alcohol on the patient's skin sterilization and oxygen, via the mask or tube, is responsible for the fire. Is the isopropyl alcohol not dried into the skin properly before surgery. Are oxygen tubes less likely to cause fires in said environment than oxygen masks, which create a vacuum over the nose and mouth (or vice versa). Statistics indicate 600 fires occur during surgery each year, but detailed data has not been released for full comparison and hypothesis (some of the information may violate patient privacy).

600???? No way.
And I just got finished watching and episode of Grey's Anatomy (which takes place in Seattle) of a man in the hospital who's head catches on fire while wearing an oxygen tube. And I thought how such a thing would never happen. Weird

this is what happens when the C grade students are allowed to practice medicine. utter carelessness and lack of professionalism. he needs major compensation and free life long treatment and rehabilitaiton. those staff ought to have their licenses revoked. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Yes, doctors and surgeons make mistakes all the time and accidents happen. But the amount of good they do outweighs ALL of the bad by an unmeasurable amount. Cerebus has no desire to go back to dealing with things like the plague, leprosy, polio, etc. etc. and 35 year life spans.
Still... it would suck if your face caught on fire during a surgical procedure.

Doctors, surgeons, dentist and others in the medical profession are human and humans make mistakes.
Like Cerebus said, the good these professions do outweighs all of the bad.
That being said, it sucks when these mistakes are made. A patient goes to a doctor with a high level of trust. The medical professionals are suppose to be just that, professionals. They go to school, they have to be licensed and they have to maintain continuing education requirements.
It is frustrating to me that doctors are sued for things that happen during treatment that are clearly outlined as potential risks. Treatments, or a procedure can go really well and the outcome can end up being bad. It's a risk.
But when there is incompetence and something really bad happens, the so called professional should absolutely be held accountable. I'm firmly planted in denial

Damn! Wonder if the guy will wind up suing the doctor? My guess is that he probably will. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
