Star Trek 2 Set For Release in May 2013

November 25, 2011

Link

Paramount has slated J.J. Abrams' long-awaited Star Trek sequel for a May 17, 2013 release - a long way out, to be sure (much longer than the studio's originally-intended June 29, 2012 date), but at least it's actually on the schedule again.

The as-yet untitled follow-up will see the return of all principal cast members from the first entry including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg, with Abrams collaborating on the script with Damon Lindelof ("Lost") as well as the writing duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned the first reboot installment.

Shooting on the sequel is expected to begin sometime early next year, with Benicio del Toro in discussions to join the cast in an unspecified villainous role.

The first film grossed over $385 million worldwide on a reported budget of $150 million, in addition to racking up a host of stellar reviews and four Academy Award nominations in the technical categories (winning one for Best Makeup).

Boo! I was really disappointed in the first one.

Most Star Trek movies are bad, and this was no worse than III or V, but I hated it nonetheless. I feel like it really betrayed the spirit of the originals (ie it was just too cool--Star Trek should be way more dorky)

I loved this one best, to be honest. I always felt slightly stupid, liking such dumb shit earlier. Now it's cool. And there are some good actors on there. Loved that entire cast. Looking forward to seeing them all back.

I'm really looking forward to this...although 2013 is too far off. The reboot was a big hit. There should have been another movie in the franchise before 2013.

This just in: Del Toro will not accept the movie role due to a dispute over financial issues, as reported by industry trade sites.

it's.. it's not the same, but, yes.. I will go see it, too.

you know, just to make sure they don't funk it up.

[even with the altered timeline] if del Toro is Khan Noonien Singh, it's more likely a nod to "Space Seed" from TOS (Star Trek: The Original Series).. I can't see this being a reboot of "Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan" (which takes place almost 2 decades after their Starfleet Academy days..) -- I will smack Abrams myself.

yeah, IMO the first one does not deserve a place alongside what may be even crappier ST films.

It's something else entirely, and I did not like it.

Good lawd I'm tired. disbelief Thanks for the support. But just because it will make me feel better type it again...

I would punch it in the face if it were physically possible to do so.

There. I don't know what the heck that last attempt was about. disbelief

In regards to the movie, Peter Weller has (supposedly) been cast to play some sort of a CEO and Édgar Ramírez (from the movie Carlos) is taking over the part Del Toro turned down. The best guesses I've read so far center around the story leading up to the Eugenics War, with Ramirez as Khan and Weller as a CEO involved with promoting re-engineering human beings who works with, or is betrayed by Khan. Other gueses say Harry Mudd is involved. Some are thinking both characters might be in it.

Regardless.... POW! To the moon!

Edit: Oops. Ramirez was in Carlos, not Castro.
