I currently have this life...we don't live out in the country yet, but still. It's a good life. My wife seems happy.

I've spoken to men who think this type of life is only attractive to women who want to "leech"...so I don't know.

There's a lot to be said for the simple life smile

I was in the west of Ireland last year, in County Clare. Man I was blown away by how nice it was... two thirds of the country is busting their arses to live in the big city (Dublin) paying crazy money for rent and mortgages... and yet you could have a great life on the other side of the country with fresh air, big cheaper houses, and a more mellow pace of life. You should check it out LaV!

Unfortunately I'm a total city urchin... I like the noise and bustle of big cities. However, living in cities has an adverse affect my health, breathing, blood pressure etc so I reckon I'll go rustic in my later years biggrin

As for women staying at home and managing the household, having babies etc... nothing wrong with that, it's a very admirable thing to do. I'm all for it! The traditional roles exist for a reason (they work) and there's nothing wrong with people who still want that.

Well said, ian. I agree with all that you said. I enjoy the city life too, but I really would prefer to have a man to share what I described with...the country setting would just make it perfect.

It was you women that didn't want that anymore !!

It's not that women didn't want that anymore, it's that they wanted a chance to be able to do something else if they wanted to...they wanted a choice.
But, considering that women still make only 70 cents on the dollar for what a man makes doing the same job with the same education/level of experience (actual statistics for the state of Michigan) things are still not where they should be.

This is sooo true, applekisses. This is another thing that bothers me...if I do work (and I do) it seems I get nowhere. neutral

I agree. The 'system' is still set up so that the man in the relationship is the primary breadwinner. And, for those who are married or in stable long-term relationships, that works. But for single women (especially single moms) it puts them in real finanical hardship.
I understand why you'd want an 'old-fashioned life' it's attractive to me too. But, that's only because we have seen the other side and worked our butts off outside AND inside the home.
If we could do just one, it'd be a lot easier, huh? smile

I love staying home and taking care of my child, and husband. There are days I get restless. Honestly I wouldn't want to be any where else. Being in the country would be the only thing other thing I could ask for. Until I can get that I'll just remember what the mountains look like and what it's like to look up in the night sky and see stars, and not street lights. It would be great to sit on the front porch in the evening and watch the sun go down... there is so much to be said about living in the country. Making myself homesick here!

There are a lot of expectations on both women and men these days.
The traditional roles still exist (men being the primary breadwinners and women being the caretakers of the home and children) but, now we have modern roles also to deal with on top of the traditional ones. So, we have women working 8 hour days and coming home to take care of kids/meals/house work and men working 8 hour days and coming home to yard work and some kid and house work issues. Also, we have all of these modern appliances that were designed to save time for us, but really all they've done is raise the level of expectation for how clean our homes are supposed to be!

Nah...I don't know if men want to live this way, seriously. The notion is that women need to contribute financially, don't you think?

My $.02...

It's nice that Kim and I are "DINK's" (double income, no kids). But she herself made the decision to work--she has specifically stated that she has no interest in being a homemaker. I never pushed her in that direction--in fact, she knew she wanted a career before I even met her.

Now, if she told me tonight that she wants to stop working when her current annual contract is up, we'd have some talking to do, but that's only because it would have an impact on our financial situation and the lifestyle decisions we've made.

As for the city versus the country, well, I definitely prefer an urban lifestyle. But that's nothing more than my opinion--I don't think it's an ideal of society in general.

i thought about this kind of life as well, but i know i'd get bored easily. plus, we are both very independant and only children so i don't think that lifestyle would work for us.

when we have kids, i'd like to stay home but i would probably still work as a freelancer or some other home based business.

besides, billy's hos need a break sometime wink

LaV, well you do make pretty babies. I've seen that first hand, you're little girl is adorable. I think if that's your "dream" lifestyle then don't give up on it. There has got to a man out there that is right for you, you just haven't found him yet. Personally I could not live in the country. Crickets chirpin' all the time,it would make me wanna go to the bathroom. wink

I want to live in a small but lush condo on Capitol Hill in Seattle with my husband, our tranny boyfriend, our two adorable rats (Riker and Picard) and our lovely rescued Greyhound. Three incomes, three pets, no kids, no yardwork.

We're about a third there. Our condo is small, but not lush or on Capitol Hill. We've got the rats (who are, in fact, called Riker and Picard), but no boyfriend or dog.

I'll try to find a job in the country, even if it's digging ditches, I've had enough of the Rat Race.

Which country side to live in? Canada sounds good to me.
