Movie Still: White Ape in John Carter

November 28, 2011

Pixar has released an image of Tyler Kitsch as John Carter threatened by a white ape from the upcoming John Carter movie, in Entertainment Weekly.

The image is accompanied by an interview with director Andrew Stanton, in which he reveals that the design of the white apes was done by Michael Kutsche, who did designs for Alice in Wonderland. The apes are blind, in this incarnation, and rely on their sense of smell.

John Carter is based on the classic novel John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Briefly summed up, post-Civil War soldier John Carter enters into a cave to evade Indian warriors and is transported to the planet Mars.

I never cared about John Carter, but I do like this relatively recent trend of every big blockbuster American movie resembling softcore gay porn.

Well that's probably exactly Lucas's exact influence towards some old scifi fantasy novel. I thought a lot of things in the new Star Wars movies seemed like narratively unconnected references to classic scifi imagery from old movies or novels.

All I could think of was, "If THAT is behind him, what the HECK is on the other end of that chain?"
