I rarely buy wines above 15 bucks. I only spend more than that when I'm going to store it for a while, or for a special occasion. You can taste the difference between a 10-dollar bottle and 50-dollar bottle, but tasting the differences between a 10-dollar bottle and 30-dollar bottle is harder.
Basic table wines are fine with me most days. For most whites I go cheap. There are an abundance of 10-12 dollar reds that suit me on any given day. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

If you usually spend $2 (I didn't event know you could get a bottle of wine that cheap) then you're probably not going to want to pay what you'll have to for either of those.
But it's worth it - even if only once, and I promise you've never tasted anything like them (unless you've tried them before, of course) - very distinctive tasting wines.
If you can even get them of course - I haven't seen Chateau Musar for years (in Ireland, but it may well be available wherever you are).
I do however happen to have a couple of bottles of Diemersfontein Pinotage.
And it's been months (possibly even a year) since I cracked open a bottle of that.
You've given me a very good idea....
I can report back later and tell you how delicious it was. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I only started drinking wine a couple of years ago.
So far I think I like Cabernet Savignon(sic) the best.
I like Gato Negro wines...they're from Chile and fairly decently priced.
Have never had an expensive bottle of wine, but I don't know that I'm ready for that yet. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I don't have a favourite, but I usually keep at least one bottle of this stuff in the house due to what I think is a good price / quality ratio:
Or this:
Around 10 euros here, both. Pretty paint-by-the-numbers French and Spanish stuff, respectively, but I like them. I buy the more expensive stuff if it suits the occasion, but I seldom go over the 11 euro mark if I am drinking alone (yeah, sort of sad, I know).

Faustino is another really good inexpensive wine. They're selling Faustino VII for €7.99 a bottle in Tesco at the moment, just bought a crate of them the other day.

Go for it! It's worth splashing out.
There's only one sure way of finding out what's what and that's to start trying them out.
Yes, you'll get some crap along the way that isn't worth what you'll pay for it, but you'll also discover that there's a huge number of more expensive wines that are worth paying for.
And with all due respect to the OP, there is a difference, and most of the time you get what you pay for. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I just googled it;
95% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo. The color is lively red with ochre hues, reminiscent of a vine leaf in autumn. The aroma is very well defined, beautifully combining the vanilla from the oak with the freshness of the grapes. The palate displays excellent balance in the mouth, velvety and elegant, with a very intense, persistent finish.

It's just the name of the grape variety that's used for making the wine. And, thank heavens, no, the ones I've tried have not been sweet.

I'm a sweet-drink type of guy.
Long Island Iced Tea is my favorite mixed drink.
Spiced Rum & Coke comes second.
Grey Goose and cranberry is my standby.
I grew up drinking Yago sangria on the holidays as a kid. (probably killed my palate at a young age)

There are plenty of sweet white wines, not so many sweet reds though. I'm not much a white wine drinker so can't think of any of the top of my head.
Possibly you should try some dessert wines - they're really sweet. Sancerre is good, or there's a really nice Jacob's Creek dessert wine with an orange flavour. Dessert wines tend to be more expensive though, you'll probably pay more than €10 for a 50cl bottle.
If your palate is dead then try a bottle of Diemersfontein Pinotage, it'll definitely wake it up. It's not a particularly sweet wine, in fact it has hints of burnt rubber (in a good way). To say it has a 'robust' flavour is to do it an injustice. Let's just say it'll definitely make your taste buds tingle in a Fuck me, what was that? Send more, we need to study this kind of way. ^ According my wife Muscat (which is a grape variety) is usually a sweet wine. Most Muscat's are white, but there are a few Rose's and dessert wines.
When I asked if she could recommend any sweet white wines, she replied "To go with what?"

Instead of a sweet red wine you're probably better off with a mild-flavoured wine that isn't so rich on tannins and flavours that resemble things like tobacco, leather, oil or something of the kind. There's plenty of that stuff usually on the shelves, but you'll probably just have to ask someone in the store for more advice.

Now see...
when an orger (or anyone) tells you that something tastes like burnt rubber - but in a good way-
that right there should be your warning.
This orger has an aquired taste... a mature palate and no... it'll be all woody dry popsicle cotton mouth experience for you...
he doesn't do sweet.. he does "full body in a dry way" ...
Fish eye wines are good and cheap... good for the beginners. Start from there... oh and Sutter home wines are good they make a good Moscato. They also have a GOOD merlot.
The bubbly white desserts are good - Moscato is popular now, but I love Eiswein
I love a red bubbly dessert called Brachetto di-aqui... its awesome and sweet...

I shouldn't have said "sweet" because I don't like those syrupy wines (I had Korean Plum wine and couldn't take it).

I'm not an afficiando at all; I do prefer slightly sweet to dry. As far as reds go, the only kind I like is shiraz. Maybe instead of doing the "bar scene" (as you mentioned in another thread), you could look into wine tasting classes at your local wine shop. That might be a good way to meet people. Then you can hang out at wine bars, which, imo, are a good alternative to the bar scene. People of a certain age (e.g. our age ) blend in more, but there are still opportunities to meet people - if that's what you're after. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

What exactly are you implying???
I agree of curse. But I think that Wine bars are very NYC...next time I hang out w/ my Manhattan friends I'll suggest it! My Long Island friends are all about the bar scene.

I was inclined to disagree with this at first, but then I reread what the OP wrote. I agree that when you buy $2 wine, you are getting what you pay for. It's sad, too, because there are plenty of wines under $15, even under $10, that would be far, far better...but $2 is a bridge too far.
On the other hand, depending on what I'm buying, there are a lot of wines that are really good and still inexpensive. You should never pay more than $12 a bottle for Malbec, for example. And what you get for $12 is quite good and dependable. Lately, I've been hooked on Italian reds, which are amazing and you can find a lot in the ballpark of $20 and under.

Agreed! I don't know a whole lot of favorite labels and such, but I know I tend to like a decent Malbec, Pinot Noir and Shiraz/Syrah over Cab or Merlot.
When it comes to whites, I prefer sweeter. Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Sometimes a Pinot Grigio.
If I just want a solid, dependable wine that's inexpensive, I often grab a bottle of Ménage à Trois Red. A nice blend for a decent price.
I have been to a handful of tastings where we went deep into italian wines and australian wines (a group called Wine Geeks Anonymous puts it on) and those were a lot of fun. Tried stuff I'd never heard of, like semillion (yum!) and others I can't even remember. I even got certified for knowing a bunch about australian wines, but I can't remember any of it. whoops. That's what happens when you're tasting wine as you learn. |

I've had that Ménage à Trois Red and I loved it! I've been trying to do some wine self-education, so I've been concentrating on French and Italian wines first, but then was going to explore Australia. So many wines, so little time...

Absolutely love this wine. Nice fruit, with a hint of chocolate on the finish. It is yum-my.
Castano Monastrell is also excellent. Even a little lower in price, too.
I am the queen of the $10 bottle. And I've found really good reds and whites at that price. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
