Actually, there is no right or wrong way. Since the word is a name that's originally in Hindi which uses a different alphabet, it's all just a matter of approximating the original pronunciation and that can yield different transcriptions. Same thing with "Ghaddafi" and "Gorbachev" for example. In some areas their names are transcribed as "Khaddafi" and "Gorbatjov" and that's just as legitimate.

spelling edit

That's not true - since WE write in English as well, there has come to be a "Proper" way to spell it in English, which doesn't just take into account it's original pronunciation. So - it's "Laxmi".

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. The origin is Hindi and the English version is just an approximation which leads to regional variations. Same thing goes for English versions of names in Farsi, Russian, Arabic etc. Even though one spelling might be more common, it's not the only legitimate one. Ask any linguist.

By the way, the same thing also applies in the opposite direction; when an English name is transcribed in a language with a different writing system. Some countries, like Japan for example, are good at embracing the variations that occur. They have a separate alphabet (katakana) almost exclusively for foreign words and when I lived there I would see my name transcribed in at least three different ways. No big deal.

Hello, my name is Dave. Nice to meet you.

Now.

What about Indian women? Never had the joy of having sex with one. Aggressive? Submissive? Do they have nice bums?

I'm from Vienna, Austria.

I had a look around my university today and didn't see one Indian girl yet! I do chat with that Pakistani girl sometimes, though, and we already agreed that she'll cook for me some time (I like hot food and I told her; however, I shall be careful about sticking my penis into her bum after we have eaten hot Pakistani food together - I don't want any third degree burns on my willy!).

I like too many...

Dorothy Parker, Starfish N coffee, WDC, Erotic City, Wasted Kisses, Man in a Uniform, Anastesia, Had U... I love so many more.

I think there is a timeless gem of a song that I NEVER tire of listening to in each album he has released.

I do have Lotus Flower and I have yet to listen to it... owned it since its release... one day.

I love the 2010 album though. nod

It's true that there are not that many Indians living here in Vienna. 2 of my best friends are Indian, but they are Trinis. Nearly half of the population over there is Indian.

I can't believe you actually said that! You CUNT! The last remark about kofta and paneer was inane enough, but I was ready to let it go, in the spirit of making friends, but this is UNBELIEVABLE! MODS, COULD YOU DELETE THIS REMARK PLEASE?

I don't know how this could be perceived as horrid or mean, but I do think you should familiarise yourself with black humour, sarcasm and free humour before you start posting on an international forum. Some of us do have a sharp way of making jokes, but the rules on this site are clear and noone has disobeyed them or been disrespectful towards you.

If you want to make friends from "all over the world", you should first be able to let go of and make fun of (national) clichés. It's how you dismiss those clichés.

Dude, you'll never make any international friends. You might as well give up right now.

See?
