Dakota Fanning Marc Jacobs ad banned in the UK

Dakota Fanning's Marc Jacobs ad banned in the UK

Oh, Dakota!

You made us feel like your protective older sibling when we watched you grow up right before our eyes and then somehow managed to make us feel even older when you graduated from high school in June, but now we have to cope with this: Your latest headline-grabbing controversy. (Youths! They grow up so fast!)

As reported by People, an ad for Marc Jacobs’ Oh, Lola! perfume featuring 17-year-old Dakota Fanning has been deemed too racy and banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority. According to BBC News, the ad in question, which features the actress holding the bottle of perfume with a giant flower on it in the middle of her lap (phew, it’s good thing flowers are in no way a euphemism for something else), the ASA said they received four complaints (though, to be fair, they could have just been leftover objections to Push) and ruled that the ad would not appear again. (EW reached out to reps for Fanning and Jacobs, who did not immediately respond to our requests.)

The ASA stated, “We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and was likely to cause serious offense.” Perfume maker Coty UK, however, disputed the decision, saying they did not receive any complaints about the “highly stylized” ad and that the photo itself is “provoking but not indecent.”

It has a definite and intentional Lolita look to it, but I'm surprised that this was banned... you?

yes, I'm surprised it's banned as well. I have no problem with this picture. She's fully dressed. I don't have an issue with the length of her dress. I really don't find this picture that sexual.

Shake it til ya make it dancing jig

^ I agree but that big protruding pink clit is rather disturbing. Oh well, it goes with her eyes.

It's funny how you can't have style, creativity and art in advertising unless you're drawing attention to what's going on between somebody's legs. Granted, I don't see anything new that hasn't been pushing the boundries before and I'd probably would have hardly noticed, but give me a break, is it absolutely necessary all the freaking time.

Oh please! This is nothing... Have they seen American Apparel's racier ads?

And really, if she was one or two years older, would this even be an issue?

If you will, so will I

I don't think they intended it to be sexual.

I guess they overlooked the bottle placement, unlike others.

Yeah the dress looks short, but she's sitting down! Geez, people need to get a grip. lol

There are tons of ads that are much more sexual... this one is apparently an issue for the censors specifically because of her age... she's a year shy of legal.

When I saw this ad waiting to get my haircut I was like he he you naughty naughy...but I like it. I'm actually surprised it's banned overseas and not here in the US. You know how free-minded we tend to be and all.

too bad the product cannot stand on its own without being marketed as fanning's 'flower'. i'm tired of young female pussy being the focus of so many marketing campaigns.

That image could be used as an example of what would qualify as the opposite of what Regan was doing with the crucifix in The Exorcist.

I really hated that photo. no idea what's so appealing about it or the theme behind it.

"what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"
