Based somewhat more authentically on the Grimm Brothers' story of a young woman who is unliked by her stepmother, the film includes the talking mirror, a poisoned apple, and some ruffian gold (not diamond) miners (and they aren't dwarfs or cute). It takes place at the time of the Crusades, and depicts the attitudes of the wealthy and the peasant classes toward one another.

this depiction of the story was suspenseful and quite scary at times.

I think the actual word "grim" comes from the writers themselves LOL, so little surprise the original fairy tales are darker then the Disney ones.

Anyone read the original "Pinocchio"? God, the pictures my book came with scared me to death. Very dark story after you have seen the disney film. Kids back then were no joke.

"Little mermaid" is another one. She dies at the end basically. Wonder why Disney changed that ending

yup, many people aren't aware of the bastardization of the original folklore that spawned disney's light hearted depiction of tales of fright and terror.

I used to love the Grimms tales as a kid but it's been a long time since I've read them, that should be fun to read again. But yeah I knew the Disney versions weren't the original versions but they're fun too.
