Anyone ever seen Louis Farrakhan live?

Is he good?

What's the average ticket price?

How long does it usually go one for?

What is it like/is it in a traditional church format (worship, preacher)?

I've been thinking of going to see him on Savior's Day so these are some things I'm curious to know.

And can you buy tickets at the door?

My sister and brother-in-law attended the Million Man march, back in the 90's.

I've heard him speak outside... women were not allowed in the mosque to hear him speak but they had speakers outside the mosque so even passer by's could listen in. It was a rare thing for him to do. Most meetings were closed.

It was in the 90's and I thought he was full of shit... until I realized that three years later he mobilized a huge group of people to turn around the Grove Hall area and make it look nice.

He led people to turn a shitty neighborhood that was lined with broken glass and trash and full and burnt buildings into a thriving urban oasis full of tree lined streets and newly built affordable houses and small black owned businesses were pooping up everywhere... all with a good speech and the power of unifying people for a common good.

Now all the prostitutes have proper street lighting and flower lined streets to work on. lol

His "lecture" lasted only 20 minutes... but MANY came to hear him speak and there was overflow and the streets were crowed, he caused a frenzy...

but again... this was in Grove Hall and historically heavily populated by members of the Nation of Islam movement.

He's a racist and doesn't attempt to unify all people, but only certain groups of people. Is that the way forward?

He can "do good things" all he wants - don't let that blind your judgment.

that's so generous of him to let the lesser sex hear his words.... what a great man, I mean, a woman should be at home, not out in the street where men might see her or where she might actually learn something

I don't have an argument 4 that statement.

And I don't have the power to argue my point right now. Furthermore, this is a very complicated and dangerous topic.

All I ask for is that people understand how other people might perceive Farrakhan as a racist, because I understand how other people might think he is the best thing since sliced bread (even if I strongly disagree - sliced bread is simply untouchable. Gonna have me two slices with butter and cheese now!).

Anyone? (ignoring all of that above...me attending is out of mere curiousity and desire to learn).

Fair enough and always a good decision!

I've only seen a fair share of videos online, never seen him live, so I can't really help you.

If you go to hear him speak, remember he is usually the "anchor" (speaks last) and draws a huge crowd.

Security was TIGHT but the crowd he gathers is a polite and quite crowd. You will enjoy yourself.

smile The crowd of people (Nation of Islam-ists) are always polite and generous in demeanor. People are always sharp of mind and sharp in dress. And grab a bean pie if you can. biggrin

Thanks! Should I dress well? Any "standard uniform"? And most importantly: are the pies good? razz

I went with a friend to see him about 20 years ago. I'm not a follower but she was and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was highly organized and security was vigilant as Paintedlady has suggested. The seating was divided into sections between members and guests and the members were divided male from female.

The minister's Saviour's Day speech is always loooong...over an hour. His speech at that time was focused on self determination, health, self esteem and economic empowerment. I've seen a few clips of more recent speeches that included him describing being taken on board a flying saucer where he was given a prophecy...I dunno what to make of that, eek

Everyone was very cordial and you dress like you would when going to church services.

IMO, Bro. Minister is quite a mixed bag just like the NOI.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Those bean pies are delicious. lol We used to have a NOI restaurant nearby. Everybody used to eat there because the place was always spotless, the food was great and the service was always excellent.

I concur with babynoz... those bean pies are yummy!

Yes, wear your Sunday best (dress shirt, slacks, jacket) ... the men of the NOI are always dressed up. So, you may be feel out of place (depending on venue also) if you show up in jeans, t-shirt to a mosque or hall.

But I don't think it matters at an arena.

We were at an arena and there were very few in jeans. Lots of peeps wore traditional african dress though...you know how we do. lol
