Eddie knows the odds of him winning an Oscar very very close 2 zero because he does NOT play the game. He is like Prince on some levels in terms of the way he operates.

Well, that's one way to look at it. A radio report about it last night characterized him as having a reputation for being "difficult to work with." So, if your Hollywood rep is "diva" and you've cried publicly about your serious work not being recognized by the Academy and you get the chance to host the Oscars, how is bailing as host -- when you can sing, dance, be funny and appropriately serious -- anything but a stupid move? They got Billy Crystal -- someone else with those traits who has already proven himself a beast in that role. Eddie blew it. [Edited 11/10/11 15:00pm]

So, is the game inherently bad? And is he better for not playing?

In my opinion it is........but every person has 2 answer that 4 themselves.

U ever heard the phrase, " selling your soul 2 the devil"? In a lot of cases, this is what happens when u sell out 2 the game.

So, Eddie's film choices have always been about him following his muse -- nothing more?

hmm

Really?

They should chose a old hardass comedic actor that's in there 70's or 80s.

You know old people don't give a shit and say whatevers on their minds. It would be a fun Oscars to watch and the academy will still respect the old fart when it's all said and done.

First of all, define "young." I don't think either of these guys are spring chickens.

And young people are more likely use the word "fag" than old people? Really?

I was gonna say. lol Eddie is, like, 50. He's not on his deathbed, but I wouldn't call 50 "young" either.

Just wait until you hit 52! 50 is going to look awfully young!

I love Eddie but he hasnt been funny in about 20 years, i mean not even close to funny. I mean i know people mellow and shit, but talk about a total 360 of who you were, he is like the ANTI-George Carlin, i mean George got angrier and funnier as he got older, Eddie went the opposite way, but i think he did that because he really wasnt a "stand up" for very long, lets be real on that, and he even said it, he almost was gimmicky, like Dice Clay was. I was hoping he still would have hosted but you cant make "gay" cracks while hosting an awards show where most of the audience is gay and industry is. I mean it would be like a white dude hosting soultrain awards and using the N word all over the place. I mean Brett is a decent director but i really dont see this whole "craze" over him, look at his lame Mariah videos

Well I did go see the Tower Heist last weekend and I have to say that without Eddie, that movie would had been dry as Zoolander. Most of the funniest scenes were the ones with Eddie featured in it. He's still got the funny chops IMO, but these type movies he's doing aren't quite "doing it" for him. I really think he should go on a stand up tour because I believe he can still bring just as he did in Delirious and Raw, but it's not like he's hurting for money so he has that luxury of deciding when (if he even wants to do stand up again). Like Graycap said, Eddie plays the game his way...that's a pretty damn good position to be in. While the media is crying about how he's an overpaid actor and that his last handful of movies have been much at the box office, he's still laughing his way to the bank. lol

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The Oscar's is a tough show to host and few have done it well. Maybe Mr. Murphy didn't like the skits or how production was going. Or maybe he realized he wasn't the right person for the job. Maybe he'll explain why he bailed. The Oscar's are so stuck in 60's type humor. Even so, I've never found Murphy all that funny and I've never been a fan of his work, standup or films.
