Eddie Murphy Quits The Oscars

Eddie Murphy
Bails Out of Oscars
After Brett Ratner Resigns

1109-eddie-murphy-oscar-brett-ratner-tmz-BN
Eddie Murphy is showing the ultimate solidarity with good friend and producing partner Brett Ratner by quitting the 2012 Oscars, which he had agreed to host.

Ratner bailed -- though he may have had no choice -- after making a homophobic remark last week at a screening of "Tower Heist," which stars Murphy.

Murphy says he wanted to do the show and never says squarely he's bailing because Ratner is gone, but his statement leaves little doubt: "I was looking forward to being part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Looks like the Motion Pictures Academy does better with old people -- they're generally a lot safer.

First of all, define "young." I don't think either of these guys are spring chickens.

And young people are more likely use the word "fag" than old people? Really?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I was gonna say. lol Eddie is, like, 50. He's not on his deathbed, but I wouldn't call 50 "young" either.

So if Bret had said "rehearsal is for bitches" then all would have been good? I swear people get upset over some pretty insignificant shit.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. rose

The Academy will find a decent replacement.

Eddie should have stayed on and lampooned it during his opening. Dropping out is weird and likely ruins any hope he had of ever winning an Oscar. Weird move.

Eddie has no such hope. He KNOWS the game of Hollywood and plays it on his terms.

AGREED!!

Granted the Oscars will be as boring as usual now these two are out.

Eddie doesn't need them...They need him and Brett to make the show watchable.

Eddie needs to do a stand up special!!

ThankUPrince!

For real! If he would had said "I quit the Oscars...but look for me on my new stand up tour"...do you know how many folks would be looking up tickets for that on ticketmaster?? The site would probably crash cause I know for a fact that he would definitely have sold out shows if he did a stand up tour again. nod

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Eddie knows the odds of him winning an Oscar very very close 2 zero because he does NOT play the game. He is like Prince on some levels in terms of the way he operates.

Yes. Because women are not a minority, misogyny is much more tolerated and Brett Ratner would not have felt pressure to resign.

And other than Dreamgirls, has he ever done a dramatic role? That makes it even harder to win awards.

But that is something cool about him, he is not making that obvious grab for respectability by playing that role where he learns to read, or dies of cancer, or helps a young girl discover the meaning of America...

Well, that's one way to look at it. A radio report about it last night characterized him as having a reputation for being "difficult to work with."

So, if your Hollywood rep is "diva" and you've cried publicly about your serious work not being recognized by the Academy and you get the chance to host the Oscars, how is bailing as host -- when you can sing, dance, be funny and appropriately serious -- anything but a stupid move?

They got Billy Crystal -- someone else with those traits who has already proven himself a beast in that role.

Eddie blew it.

They should chose a old hardass comedic actor that's in there 70's or 80s.

You know old people don't give a shit and say whatevers on their minds. It would be a fun Oscars to watch and the academy will still respect the old fart when it's all said and done.
