I use withdrawal of Priviliges now. It works well. On the opposite end of the spectrum I use rewards for good behaviour.
Smacking was previously used and only as a last resort. But now my Little lad behaves enough not to ever require that.
I also use Education, so to speak. My Son now knows if he does something like run into the Road, he can get seriously hurt or killed. He knows that Death means you do not exist anymore so he realises the importance of being "safe" in that aspect. Some people disagree with my way of thinking there, but I believe that it is better to teach the Child the reality rather than just say "You can get hurt". Besides that, we already had to explain Death to him after his Uncle died, who he worshipped, and was asking lots of questions about.
We never give him Sweets etc to keep him quiet or on demand, Sweets are an earned reward, this in turn encourages him to be more behaved and also to respect that he doesn't get anything by simply demanding it. To be honest, we are lucky in that he doesn't eat lots of Sweets and prefers healthy things like Carrot and bread Sticks (This was his own choice and not something we enforced on him)
While at a recent Parents evening, my Sons Teacher praised our Son greatly for his mannerisms, politeness and pleasantness, she also said he was a Credit to myself and my Wife, so I think its working ok
He still has his moments though, after all he is still a Child
Life is short, don't be a dick.

My daughter is 5 years old and actually really well behaved.
Is there a certain age for girls when they start being problematic? small circles, big wheels!

nothing straw in his post, but point taken. so let's look at non-random adults, shall we?
is it acceptable for a boss to spank his employees? or for the US president to spank the vice president or the secretary of state?
if you answer no, do tell me, where is the difference? the only difference I can spot is, that adults are usually stronger and could spank you back, while a kid does not have the physical power to do so.

Uh, we have children in the US killing adults, other children, and parents. So this notion that children don't have the "power" is bullshit.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
uhh I was referring to smaller children obviously, which don't have the power. buit anyway, so you tell me, what is the difference then between adults and children. if I can discipline a child with slaps or other forms of corproal puishment, why can't this happen amongst adults too? Has anyone tried unplugging the United States and plugging it back in?

Yeah, it does happen. My grandmother and father (they're deceased), she used to tell him it doesn't matter how old he gets, she will let him have it, if he disrespect him. Or I would listen to elderly folks say they have no qualms wacking their grown children with their cane, if they disrespect them

Around 13/14 when they start hanging out with other girls who clearly weren't raised right. Plus the mood swings from the monthly period only aggravate matters later on down the road. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Interesting how there are so MANY viewpoints in this bitch. And not everyone is agreeing. I just wanted a debate. I just hope it don't turn into a flaming war between the time-outters and the "I'd beat/spank/whip your ass to shape" folks.

There are certain topics that tend to work people up on the Org.
- Racism - Abortion - Capitalism - God - Prince-vs-Michael Jackson & [yes] - Spanking

It's the darnest thing...I've been here long enough to see countless "spanking" threads turn nasty and degenerate into flame wars.
...and the funny thing is, CHILD ABUSE doesn't receive this much attention. Kids being tortured and abused, starved, neglected, burned with cigarrette butts and battery acid...
NO it's spanking that gets the troops to square off on the battlefield of Org.
Someone should write a thesis on this phenomenom. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I've found that fascinating too. You hardly get people up in arms over child abuse - but that's probably because everyone agrees it's wrong but it seems when it comes to spanking or any form of discipline, that's when the claws come out.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Its actually quite sad but I can only surmise that people relate more to that which is "personal" to them versus that which is right and just. If you don't know anyone that's been truly abused then you can't relate to it and if you can't relate to it then its not all that important to you. This is similar in the way we view the homeless and impoverished. As long as its not OUR problem then it truly isn't a problem at all.
i dunno what I'm talking about. Carry on. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Speaking of which...Thanksgiving is approaching and all of a sudden people start to get into the "feed the homeless" bandwagon...and food drives will abound....

Fools wait until Thanksgiving and Christmas to "feed the homeless". It's like what Quagmire said to Brian after telling him how hypocritical of him to say what he said about the homeless: "I work down at the soup kitchen, never seen you down there! Wanna help? Grab a ladle!"

I don't personally have a child, but if I did,I would probably use the time outs, and taking away priviliges to discipline them. I know I was spanked growing up,but I must have been a fast learner, because I dn't remember ever getting spanked.
I believe that whichever form of discipline you choose to use,you need to be consistent with it.
