Are you ready for the END?

I was watching a show on the ancient Mayans, and how they predicted the "end of the world" (really just the end of our current time cycle which may or may not bring about cataclysmic change)...and the point was made that they probably prepared themselves for their "inevitable" demise.

So I started thinking...if the end of the world is really a year away...I am NOT ready.

hmph!

Things are not where I want to leave them off at. I need to settle things, do things, see things...I need more than a year. Last summer I would've said, "Sure, bring it on." Now, I need more time to get things in order and be at "peace" (if such a thing is possible).

Surely we all have "bucket list" items, right? More than that...IMO we all have to balance our lives - offset the good with the bad, the sweet with the sour - to be at "peace". Or at least to be able to stoically greet the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse (or that advancing giant Tsunami wave on the beach).

So if the end were to come soon...are YOU ready?

DISCLAIMER: This thread is not intended - in any way, shape, or form - to discuss the validity of the "End of the World". Whether or not you believe is inconsequential. Just answer the damned question.

I firmly believe the 'end'of the mayan calendar only marks the end of a cycle. And the new cycle that begins after that will more or less be a leap foward for humanity, or atleast, I hope it will be.

I'm excited fort things to come and I believe that we, as humans, will develop into a more civilised species.

I really, really hope you're right, and I want to think this way myself.

The problem for me is that I view the human species as a very VERY supersticious and illogical one. I've been reading about cargo religions of the South pacific : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult and after being amuse and a bit shocked, it started to scare me.

The reason , is that here in the more rational 'west', we have groups of people who have developed their own 'relgion' of sorts---the UFO and government conspiricists. It's not that I myself don't believe in UFOs--I certain believe in intelligent alien life. It's that I don't believe any of the silly eye witness accounts or fake photographs to be remotely true, or anything approaching concrete evidence. yet there are large and growing numbers of people who have bought into it, believe it, and are spending money trying to convince others about alien abductions, etc.---isn't this religion?

My point is that I think unless we evolve past the way we approach 'belief' , we may not evolve.

On a brighter note, I do believe the following:

1. machines will become so smart in the very near future, that it will actually be a race between man and machine to see who discovers the rest of the great physics equations (including the theory of everything, or Einstein's Unified theory).

2. We may end up genetically enhancing ourselves to be more inteligent.

3. Discovery of alien life may cause us to re-examine current religious beliefs.

Wishful thinking of course.

Truth is that if we develop the ability to genetically enhance ourselves, men would be walking around with bigger penises not bigger brains.

1: I don't think we will be outsmarted by machines. I do think, however that more 'astonishing' scientific discoveries will be made: discovering that some particles do travel faster than the speed of light is only the beginning.

2: Maybe you will finally learn how to spell 'intelligent' touched

3: I believe that the human species are found throughout the universe. And that more developed humans aided us in our progression here on on earth.

As in "human beings" or "human-like beings"?

I can definitely wrap my head around ancient visitors messing with the DNA of our primate ancestors to create the "intelligent" species that we call "Humans".

hmm

I don't think the genetic enhancements will be something availble to the public persay, but done by governments who wish to further their causes. I would be willing to bet either the US and China will the first to conduct such experiments.

I'm guessing something in the next 30 years, scientific discoveries will only accelerate.

Not so much "regrets" but rather open items that you wish to resolve. hmmm

I would be surprised if such experiments aren't ALREADY taking place. The government only let's us know what they want us to know. Do you really think that cloning isn't progressing at breakneck speed even though (for the press) it's fallen off the radar?

Just imagine what secret labs nouveau-rich CHINA may be hiding??? eek

If it is truly the end then I am 'ret ta go. I have done pretty much everything I have wanted to do. I've fallen in love, I've travelled to another country, I've gone to college, I've had children, I've survived in this world with no one taking care of me.

Considering that none of us are promised another day and it is truly the end, there is nothing we can do about it so why stress?

Things on folks' bucket lists are only impossible if they believe they are.

I always like to think that IF we ever encounter other intelligent beings (if we do not blow ourselves up before) they will be soooooo unhuman we don't even recognise it.
