Ridley Scott Says He’ll Direct Blade Runner Sequel [img:$uid]http://i.imgur.com/Zahyb.jpg[/img:$uid]
November 06, 2011
Film director Ridley Scott plans to make a follow-up to his groundbreaking 1982 classic, Blade Runner.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Scott said he is on board to direct a follow-up and has been interviewing writers who can help him with the screenplay. Scott says the new project is “liable to be a sequel.”
Scott, 74 years old, recently finished shooting the sci-fi movie Prometheus and is an executive producer of a new TV series on Discovery Communications Inc.’s Science Channel, Prophets of Science Fiction.
Earlier this year, production company Alcon Entertainment said it was planning a new Blade Runner project with Scott at the helm, but it didn’t reveal whether it would be a prequel or sequel to the original film.
“Blade Runner” devotees may not have to wait long for the new movie. “I think I’m close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver,” Scott says, “we’re quite a long way in, actually.”
The original film was inspired by sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and told the grim story of Rick Deckard, a “blade runner” who hunts down “replicants” — androids who long to live free lives. Scott says Dick, who he says was “stressed” when he met him, found a romanticism in his pessimism. And similarly, Blade Runner didn’t offer a romantic view of the future.
“That’s why I think I was so unpopular” when the film was released, Scott says, because at the core of the film is a story about mortality. “Even though people think it’s a cool Philip Marlowe film with Deckard played by Harrison Ford,” he says, “the film is very much about humanity.”
Scott says the new Blade Runner project is moving ahead “not with the past cast, of course.” No Deckard? “No, not really,” he says.

Awesome. I wonder if Vangelis will return too? I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

The announcement that he'd commited to direct a new Blade Runner "film" came out a while ago, but this is the first confirmation that it's actually a sequel.
I'm on the fence about this. Blade Runner and Alien are my two favourite films. But Scott's just wrapping up production on Prometheus, which is a prequel to Alien, and it's looking to be pretty great. So, I guess I'll be optimistic about this.
[EDIT: It wouldn't be BR without Vangelis, in my opinion...]

Still sucks that Rutger Hauer had to die but ole Sean Young got to live forever. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer.

Honestly I was not wild about this movie. It's great visually, but I'd really like to see something closer to the original story.
Mostly, I felt that watching it that Rutger Hauer (as good as he is) would not need any kind of test to determine that he is not human. He is the weirdest acting dude ever, and clearly a replican. My Legacy

I think he should leave well enough alone.
...Unless he's planning on casting Fassbender again, of course. [Edited 11/7/11 15:04pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Have you seen him in the original Hitchiker? The dude is FRIGHTFUL!!!! Sean Bean, as good an actor as he is, just couldn't provide the same effect. In the original you want Rutger to be taken down immediately. In the remake, you want those loser college kids to get killed. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Even in this day of incredible CGI, nothing still comes close to this famous cityscape sequence. It just seems more grounded to me than a similar CGI sequence in the new Star Wars trilogy.

Rutger Hauer certainly was an underrated actor, it would be cool if Ridley gives him a little cameo or something (hey, if The Expendables can spark 80s nostalgia...). He may well approach his old go-to-man Russell Crowe as a substitute for Harrison Ford though. I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

Totally, it was an amazing sequence. It also begs the question now that Jordan Cronenweth is no longer with us, who can match it? I know Dariusz Wolski and John Mathieson are who Ridley Scott work with regularly now, but I find their stuff a bit dull. I hope whoever it is dusts off the big factory xenons. I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

Also, Blade Runner 2 will probably be bad, but it would be really nice if it were good. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~
