In a time when the world is coming down around them, people might turn to a higher power for comfort. If you paid attention to what was being said during that scene, it was clear that the characters were trying to find a glimmer of something hopeful to cling to in a hopeless situation.
Advertisers? Really?
I do, however, agree with what you said about that house seeming like it's out of place in a zombie apocalypse. I kept expecting a zombie to just pop up on the porch while one of them was sitting out there in the dark.
OK Chocolate1, that is kind of my point... surely when all the zombieness kicked off things like gods and religions were abandoned... i think gods and zombies are mutually exclusive... they might try to find hope in humanity but not in something as irrelevant as gods post zombie apocalypse... it's lazy, clichéd writing and there has been so much of it in the first 3 episodes that there must be some sort of agenda.
there was something else i forgot when i was ranting last night too, what is with all the children in peril-tug on the heart strings based story lines? write the children out of it!
It is like when you watch an 18 rated film (is it 'R' in America?) and you really like it so you watch the sequel which this time, for commercial reasons has been rated 15, and the sequel is just like a watered down version and is ultimately crap...
having said all that it could easily pick up towards the end of the series.

I like the Children in Peril bit, it gives that edge of 'no one is safe'. That was partially what made Lost so good, before the Writers ruined it with their bullpoo at the Finale
The Cliffhangers are good too, otherwise we would get bored when each episode tied its story line up, it would cease its continuity and just be random stories, not good. This is a reason why I have switched off from Terra Nova, there is no real continuity, its just a few random stories with a semi silent background story. Booooooorrrrriiiiiing. Life is short, don't be a dick.

One of the richest things about the "zombie genre" is that it attempts arguably the most relevant sociopolitical critique in all of horror by way of simply showing our world as it is... but on undead steroids. The theological debate in the show is important because it reflects the debate that's going on in our real world -- a world that also is in shambles. The absence of that discussion would render the environment of the show fake, certainly all the more because it takes place in the American South.
As for the kids in peril thing: Writers know that kids and cute animals in peril are the quickest way to elicit concern from viewers. (We haven't cared much about defenseless young women for several decades now. ) But, yeah, the device gets old. The only way I can see it continuing to be effective is if producers actually back up the threat by letting some kids -- and not just kids we don't know and don't care about in this show -- die... horribly. Absolutely. They are right on point, imo.
And I don't mind it being a little slower and I like character development. If it was all zombies, all the time, I would definitely lose interest.
As for the house having power, it's not totally implausible. I live out in the country and almost everyone here has these massive generators...it could be running on a couple of those. My only critique about that is you would hear them running outside...they are pretty loud. I'm guessing there are no walkers near the house because it is so isolated. [Edited 11/2/11 5:11am] |

I was a bit puzzled by the House too, but I am wondering if theres something coming in relation to that. Otherwise they could end teh Series there by everyone moving in and living a "The Waltons" style life
I think the preview showed a zombie down in the well.
I have the feeling that family did some crazy stuff with their dead, like in Romero's "Survival of the Dead".
Did anyone watch last night?
I KNEW IT!!!! That Hershel just seemed too shady.
Why else was he so anxious to send innocent people back out into the unknown?

I am sure the Zombie fell through the Well cover, the Wooden cover looked like it had a hole in it when the Camera panned over it for the first time, I immediatly pointed it out to my Daughter who has been watching with me - I laughed my head off when that Zombie split in two, man that was gross

It makes sense that they would. I was really curious what they made for dinner, so I was trying to get a look, but they didn't show it. They did show various beverages, which was interesting.
I also liked seeing the back story on the military dropping napalm. I'd like to see much more about what happened immediately after.
One thing that's boring me about this season is the search for the missing girl. I have a feeling the search for her is going to lead up to the end of the season, but it's getting old. I have a friend who got to play a zombie in the background in episode 6 or 7 of this season, and he said they were still looking for the girl.... |

I agree.
Flashbacks would give us more perspective.
I have the feeling they are going to find the girl as a zombie.

I am nowhere near caught up on Walking Dead comics (the TV show has veered far away from them anyway), but I think they will find the girl at the very end of the season, and she will have been "rescued" by the Governor. |

The episode this past Sunday had both those scenes. It opened with a flashback of what happened right after the zombie attack, and Shane commented on the planes dropping napalm on the city. The generator scene was when the guy was telling Rick he needed to control his people. |

Quite pleased with the Episode last night, The Napalm bombing was quite cool, but not just cool enough. It was too distant to really have any effect, should have been closer, perhaps show people running and screaming etc, more impact into the "horror" of what was going on
The barn scene at the end was a shocker, I seriously did not expect that - Very cool - Especially when she said "You weren't supposed to see this" Dirty secrets, gotta love them :p Life is short, don't be a dick.

I just had a feeling about that man... He was too anxious to get rid of them, and I couldn't understand why he'd send innocent people back out in that "world" when he had a safe, peaceful place for them.
I watched Romero's "Survival of the Dead", in which they had the zombies chained, waiting for a cure. I thought, "Oh yeah, Hershel's keeping the walkers somewhere, just like in the movie."

The comic kicked ass for awhile but now it's best plotline was over and done with years ago. It's still alright but I feel like it should end soon before it gets less and less interesting.
I kind of hope the show has a shorter run. It's pretty good so far and if they handle some of the stuff that should be coming up in the future well you're all gonna love it. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~

Andrea was in a dangerous situation, but I didn't expect her to be murdered.
I had been wondering how Maggie and Glenn could ride in and out of town without seeing any walkers... I was kind of glad she got attacked last night.
I believe they're going to find Sophia as a walker at the end of the season.
It is a little slow, but it still keeps my interest.
