Awesome apps? Okay, so...my new iPhone is supposed to ship next week. I've never had one before, so...hip me to the happenin' apps.
Full disclosure: I refuse to pay for apps unless they are totally awesome, can't-live-without-it kinds of things. So the free ones will get the bulk of the love. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The only one I find myself using a lot is Shazam, I got it for free through Starbucks, not sure if it is free to everyone now? Rhythm floods my heart♥The melody it feeds my soul

Ex-Moderator | This one makes me totally silly, but I love the period tracker app. It allows you to track your period, symptoms and moods, tells you when you’re ovulating, when your next period will be, etc. There’s a free version, but I kicked in the $1.99 to get a few more options. You can even chart out your records. I think this would be particularly helpful for those of us who track things related to our health.
I also like urbanspoon – pretty sure it’s free. Especially helpful when traveling. It allows you to find restaurants in whatever area you’re in, you can look based on food type (breakfast, Italian, etc.) and you can see reviews, view menus, get directions, all kinds of things. |

Actually, I have one of those on my Droid now. I use it to help me figure out how to cycle my progesterone, since I can chart my temperature with it. (I used to chart on paper, but that's a pain - especially if I go out of town.) Otherwise, I'm just doing a basic two-week low/two-week high cycle - which doesn't always match my actual cycle.
I will check out urbanspoon.
Thanks! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

So wait, if you don't know the name of the song or person, how exactly does the app find songs for you? surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water

hold the phone out to the speaker so it can hear the song! It doesn't work from just humming a melody, I've tried that

I don't think I'm THAT bad a singer! I can carry a tune, and mostly I'm even in the right key!

It tells you that it must be a recorded song....it won't even pick up live stuff....hmmm, i wonder if it will pick up officially released live stuff???? Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

How does the app work?
I'm assuming apps such as Shazam or Soundhound use the type of software technology Youtube uses now to identify what songs are copyrighted, owned by what label and/or music publisher with in seconds: what songs will be allowed to play, what songs are blocked, what songs can play in these countries but blocked in others, I'll assume its all based on sometype of algorithm.
You open up the app of course you tap the screen and within seconds - 15 seconds or less - it listens to the song: the album, the song title, and artist are named. Note: Shazam is way better than Soundhound in identifying songs. Soundhound doesn't do as well if the song starts off instrumentally and it takes longer. Shazam can also id' most songs even if there's background noise such as people talking over a song. I think both apps have a free version, I would buy Shazam though worth every penny. (imo)

Well, it did pick up Carole King and James Taylor's "Up On The Roof" Live at the Troubadour (official release) and Prince's "Diamonds and Pearls" from One Nite Alone Live!
However, it did not pick up "If I Was Your Girlfriend" from the SOTT movie, which i have on my ipod.
