Ubuntu 11.10 upgrade

Anyone upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 yet? If you have, what's your verdict?

I'll wait, as always Ubuntu and connecting via Wifi can be a pain in the butt.

What kind of wireless do you have? I have a Broadcom and I usually have to run a script after a major upgrade. I primarily run a Debian version of Linux Mint on my laptop.

A few weeks ago, I put 11.04 on an old PC for the wife and kids and when I upgraded to 11.10 last week, I noticed it was moving a lot slower. I upgraded the RAM from 512 to 1024 and it's been pretty snappy for a Pentium 4.

It really is used for Web browsing (Chromium) and LibreOffice for papers and things. They've been pretty happy overall. It's quite the change from the old gnome interface or the Windows gui, but I'm almost used to it.

Er... I should add that I'm not a fan of the "Start Menu". It's frustrating to try to search for an app that I thought was installed and I'm getting prompts to install a closely worded program that may not be as kosher.

I'm using Gateway and I have a "no name" wirless USB adapter with a Realtek chipset. lol

Believe or not this has been the only wireless device I've purchased for which it's been kinda plug and play. I say kinda because I bought several of these adapters from the same seller / website, some plug and play and some I've had to write some code.

At some point I'll upgrade my RAM (desktop computer) and I'll try Sabrent Wifi Card Adpater. Mint 11.04 up on the desktop it wouldn't upload.... I'm not sure why. confused

Not me. I'm using Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). wink

In fairness, Ubuntu was my first ever Linux distro. But after 9.10, I made the switch to Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) because I prefer to have an OS that comes with sound immediately after installment. These days, I more happy with using LMDE since it's Linux Mint without Ubuntu as the "middle man".

To be honest Tony I like Linux Mint too... a lot. I've been using it via live but I may go ahead and create a partition on my HP Vista computer. I'm not sure why it would work with the desktop, it's 5 years old and I have laptop that almost ten years old and it booted up.

Most Linux distros (especially Debian) works very well on older desktops & laptops.

Some of the newer and younger computers (within 3-years-old) might have a problem with Linux distros because the newer NVIDIA video cards can not recognize Linux as easily as it can recognize Windows. That problem is more the fault of NVIDIA.

So far, I don't have that problem because my NVIDIA video card is as old as my Gateway desktop itself, 10 years and counting. cool

For other people's old PCs that they just want to get on the internet with, I blow on Mint LXDE which is still Ubuntu based. That's the lightweight desktop. Pretty much, if it boots and runs okay from the LiveDVD (video, sound, etc) it's good to go. Most of these are desktops/towers with wired network cards, so I don't have to fuss with wireless. I set Chromium or IceWeasel as their default web browser, add Ad-Block Plus and let them have at it.

As I mentioned, my laptop and a virtual pc I have at work run LMDE because I like the "rolling distribution" side of it. It's bitten me in the butt because I've had my system horked with updates, but working through problems is the best way I can be familiar with the o/s right?

I've also been refamiliarizing myself with RedHat/CentOS because of the VMWare ESX servers we have.

Here are a couple of links that may help OP (I know you probably have already hunted the web, but just in case):

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ (they may have a driver that works for you now)

Debian-based Linux distros is all that I know of for the time being. But I would like the have some free time to learn about the history of Red Hat, mostly because I been reading about Fedora being THE most cutting-edge of all of the Linux distros available today.

Thanks for the hook-up, I'm going to see if I can get Mint running on the desktop to. cool
