I have a friend whom i've known now since about 2003. I met him cause he always rode mass transit with his uncle who worked with me til he retired. This guy has had a fetish for this mass transit job, one day I was finishing up my run & he must have got on at some point but I never saw him. He asked if he could ride back to the garage to meet his uncle & I said yes. He then asks me how long I been with the company & I answered him. He had the same uniform that we wore at the time & said he was suspended for not tucking his shirt in.

I became friends with another co-worker who befriened him. Shortly thereafter he asked my co-worker/friend could he move in with him as his then girlfriend put em out. When my co-worker asked me for my input, I told em no, as he really didn't know him long enough. He went against my advice & moved him anyway! One day while me & my co-worker were doing some small overtime, this guy pops up again.

I didn't want to be rude & we conversated a little about hobbies which included baseball, football, alcohol & women! We had a lot in common & we were to go drinking later that night. I called him around the time I said I would & no answer. I called back a little later & the same thing. I then called the other guy whom I met him through & he stated he's probably with his girl. OK cool, but at least answer & let me know.

I ran into him a couple of days later & he says he fell asleep, but let's go throw a couple of cold-ones back & look at the ladies. After about four rounds of beer & liquor, he states that he was with his girlfriend that night we were supposed to hang out. At this point i'm realizing i'm dealing with an untruthful individual & this was just the beginning of numerous lies. I then found out he had never worked for the company at no point in his life & i'm like wow, why lie!

But with all that he was still a cool cat to hang with on occasion. I asked one of the union reps about his termination even though we have 8-9 garages all over the surrounding area they all communicate, & he stated he knew of no such case or anyone by this name. We were drinking a couple of days later & he stated his case was being arbitrated. I asked who was handling his case & he says the union hall brass, which I knew was BS. I then told him what I had found out, and his facial expression said:BUSTED!!! He then went to the bathroom & came back while still wearing the uniform & says "I never worked there", I just said that, & i'm like wow, here's a pattern starting to develop and for no reason whatsoever.

To speed up the story while the lies have accumualted to where it's embarrassing, I still thought that other than the lying, he's a cool dude who just lied a lot. He had met at least 5 women while staying with my co-worker/friend & when the ladies would come to visit him, they'd fall in love with the house. He'd tell them it was his when it wasn't & when my friend would come home from work, the women would see him in uniform and realise who the owner was, not to mention my friend/co-worker had the bigger room.

These kind of fibs should not be told cause they only make the individual look bad & the lies could be verified as some women would call the house & ask "is that his house".

He recently had a heart attack at the end of September & he is out on short-term disability, and i'm out of work also for a joint ailment & receiving about $3300 a month. Last week he called me just to tell me his benefits manager was giving him $3500 for now & every two weeks he'd get a check. I felt like he was trying to show me up, but what for. Supermarket employees or police/firefighters for that matter don't receive these kind of benefits. Today he calls & now on top of the $3500 there's another $4700 coming as well. There were numerous pauses in the storytelling along with the voice pitch changes which is a blatant sign of lying. I don't understand all the lies & the reason for them please help!!!!!!

Yes our friendship is suffering behind this & it hurts. I'm having things at the house and he's not being invited cause of the constant lying. The issue with his finances just pretty much iced the cake. I mean he made a comment of wanting to end his life a while back cause of what my other friend & me had. When question why, he states we have new cars, houses and a good job. That's no reason to check out though, maybe motivation would be!

Some people are like that. Why? I have no idea, maybe to feel important, or to fit in somewhere. Personally, I just don't get that invested in time and energy with such a person, casually, sure. Some of them can be kind of nice, would give you the shirt off their back, others can be quite scary. I guess trying to figure out such a person could be interesting for somebody.

What exactly do you need help with? It sounds like you and this guy never were really true friends, but just "hanging out" buddies. If its been proven to you that he's been lying to you numerous times, then why would you continue to associate yourself with him? Him being "a cool dude" isn't a good enough reason. Obviously, he isn't "cool" if he's a compuslive liar. You invite and condone his confusing behavior by answering his phone calls and even giving him the time of day to talk to him. STOP SIGN!!!!!! If you want to stop being confused, then stop feeding into this unhealthy relationship and cut this guy off!

You need to decide for yourself what type of behaviour you want to have in your life and if you're ok with hanging out with compulsive liars then, hey, go for it. If compusive lying is a problem (as it would be to most people) then you need to keep this person at a distance. Be cordial if you want, but just keep in the back of your mind this person isn't really trustworthy and thus shouldn't really be worth your time.

You said at least twice that this person seems cool or whatever to hang out with, but the reality is, for compulsive liars, you don't REALLY know who and what he is because he's probably been truthful less than 50% of the time he's opened his mouth to you.

I speak from experience from "knowing" someone exactly like that.
