If the ex-con was trying so hard to change his life, then he should have also changed his mentality. He had the right to defend himself, but based on what I saw on the news video, he also had enough time to walk/run away, get a weapon, and return. That is enough time for him make a choice to not return to the front of the store. Forget the "jail mentality" of violence (if that's what was going through his mind), just walk away, call the cops. Not beating someone's skull in does not make you less of a man. The same goes for the women. Being questioned about a $50 (which is pretty standard procedure in any store) is not grounds for freaking out and attacking a grown man. Grow up, walk away (alive, without a felony assault charge or a crushed skull).

Also, you can see that he is beating the woman with the metal rod, then pauses then starts again, then stops. Then a co-worker or two walk over to try to talk to him, and he starts again and the co-workers even back off. On this video part of the footage is cropped, but on the news you saw it better. He realized they were subdued, but continued to beat them; that's excessive.

The pauses I am talking about are at :42 and then again at :56. After the 56 second mark, you don't see the employee, but you see his co-workers back away. I remember that part from the news coverage - it seemed like the co-worker went over to talk to the employee and then he was hitting the women again and the co-worker backed off really quickly (which you can see). But the way the video is cropped, you don't see the employee at that point in the clip posted in this thread.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
