i get the feeling they toss in the sex scenes when the writer run out of ideas for plot and character development. kind of like the default setting.

what i really dislike is when thje gratuitous sex is mixed in with violence so that the audience is conditioned to feel arousal in conjunction with watching violent acts. creeptastic, that.

ps when i feel like the writers or directors are trying to play me with that gratuitous sex crap i put the movie on fast forward and watch it thus. now that's amusing

The sex in that movie was not gratuitous if you got the whole point of the film.

We see a civilized, simple, meek mild nice guy who is in denial of his past until it's violently forced upon him. This is an allegory for the primal instincts of man/animal, masked by thousands of years of civilization.

Even the sex scenes reflected that. The first one being somewhat "cute" and sugarcoated to be a leisure activity as opposed to a biological necessity, the latter being strictly primal and an act of dominance.

Many movies have gratuitous sex scenes though, sure, but most of them are terrible.

Maybe I can see your point with regard to the fuck scene on the staircase but you can't really justify Maria Bello's big black bush emerging from the bathroom. It's like "here's my cooch, see ya!" Totally unecessary. What was also weird about that scene is that Viggo's character acted like he never saw his wife's pubic hair before. Not a gratuitous sex scene but defnitely a case of unnecessary nudity.

Yes. We need more. It really helps the movies without good actors or good plots. The worst the movie the more T& A (showgirls anyone).

Showgirls wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. Elizabeth Berkeley just wasn't a good fit. Put somebody else in the lead role and its a better film. Still....I could have gone without all those itty bitty boobs.

I disagree. Elizabeth Berkeley and the entire cast were not the problem. The screamwriters & director were not the problem. The real problem with Showgirls was actually half of the viewers AND all of the film critics that went to see this motion picture for all of the very wrong reasons (READ: expecting a Hollywood-driven high budget hardcore porn flick), plain and simple.
