Are you friendly with your neighbors?

Did you introduce yourself when you moved into your neighborhood or when they moved into your neighborhood?

Did you bake a cake or a pie?

Did you invite them to your housewarming party? Or were you invited to theirs?

Do you borrow sugar from them?

Have you had any tiffs with them?

Discuss.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

FIRST wave

Did you introduce yourself when you moved into your neighborhood or when they moved into your neighborhood? Yes

Did you bake a cake or a pie? I never bake for anybody, even for myself (I hate that) but I've been helpful, so did she.

Did you invite them to your housewarming party? Or were you invited to theirs? Yes.

Do you borrow sugar from them? Yes, so did she.

Have you had any tiffs with them? Never.

  • The ones on the left (mother & daughter) were standing outside when I was with the realtor on the day of my closing (I guess trying to see who was moving in). I walked over to them, introduced myself and told them I was buying the house. They were very nice. smile The ones on the right seemed like they were avoiding me, until one day my doorbell rang. She had been visiting her country and hadn't been home for the first couple of months I lived here. She's very nice, too. smile Then there's Bob. He lives across the street. It snowed the first week I was here, so I was out shoveling. So was he. I stopped and crossed the street to introduce myself. He was so rude! eek I've lived here almost 3 years, and that SOB still won't speak. pout
  • I've invited the ones on the left to 2 parties, but they've declined both times. I don't really see the other one too much.
  • No borrowing, but the older lady on the left insists on placing my garbage can by my garage door since they come while I'm at work.
  • I did catch her daughter digging up dandelions in my yard so they didn't blow into her yard this past summer. rolleyes I was annoyed, but I figured, "Rock on". lol

I'm sort of the grande dame of my condo, since I bought the first unit here. (In fact...now that I think about it, my closing was 9 years ago this past Tuesday.) After years of (mostly) anonymous apartment living, I decided I would make an effort to at least know the names of all my neighbors. And I stuck to that - with the first round of homeowners, anyway. Several of the units have turned over so many times that I just haven't kept up with who's who, anymore.

I still always know the people who live in the units closest to me, though. The neighbor I disliked most (that bitch next door) finally sold her unit over the summer and moved out. I've met the guy who bought the place and he seems very nice. He's a lot quieter and has no barking dogs - which thrills me to my core.

There are a couple neighbors with whom I'm quite friendly. I served with one on the condo board a few years ago and another actually got my email address and contacted me before she bought her place, to find out how I liked it. When her father was ill a couple years ago, she left her two teenagers at home alone for a few days and asked if I would be one of the contacts for them if anything happened where they needed an adult's help. I agreed, of course.

I've never borrowed sugar from anyone because I usually make sure I have all the ingredients for something before I start baking. shrug

And I've never baked anything for new neighbors. People have so many goofy dietary issues these days that it's better not to. Besides, I'm the grande dame - not the flippin' Welcome Wagon. hmph!

lol

Not to be gloomy...but when I was 9 yrs old, one of my mother's dear friends went across the street to her neighbor's house to borrow a cup of sugar (apparently this wasn't out of the norm and she had borrowed sugar from her neighbor before). So this particular time she went to her neighbor's house, apparently she went in and never came out. My mother's friend walked into a robbery that had gone wrong and ended up being murdered. We believe she may have walked into her neighbor being murdered and maybe tried to help save her and ended up getting killed as well. 20 years later and the killer has NEVER been caught...though they suspected the killer was not a random stranger.

My office is in the front of the house, and I had the windows open. I thought I heard noise, so I looked out. She was sitting out there with some tool, and a bucket, digging on my lawn.

I went outside with my trash can to empty my vacuum canister, like I didn't know she was out there, and said, "Oh! Keisha! Hi!"

She told me that her landscapers told her that if the neighbors didn't deal with them, they'd affect her lawn. I had just sprayed them that afternoon, but she said, "That stuff doesn't work."

So I emptied my vacuum, and went back inside. I guess she got bored or tired, and went inside. In the next couple of days, the spray I used killed all of the remaining ones. lol

I live in an apartment building (8 units). I didn't go knocking door to door to introduce myself but I do know (not necessarily by name) everyone in the building. I did not bake anything, nor was I the receipient of baked goods. Only one girl has invited me to her apartment; I've never invited anyone to mine. It seems like there are 4 older tenants/couples and 3 younger (late 20s/early 30s) tenants/couples in the building so there aren't a ton of parties. The couple who live two stories down has the most parties, but I am never invited. shrug No to the borrowing thing, too.

The woman who lives directly below me is older and lives alone so I do check on her sometimes -- like when Hurricane Irene was supposed to hit NYC, I was leaving for the week but made sure to ask her if she was staying, where to go in case of evacuation, etc. She is friends with the older couple that lives on the 2nd floor -- they watch each others cats when one goes out of town. I also know the woman who lives on the 4th story in the building next door. I have a balcony and she has a terrace and we both have flowers/plants so we talk sometimes when we're outside at the same time.

There is a couple who live in the apartment directly above me. The wife/girlfriend is nice enough but the guy is a jerk. The weekend I moved in, I was playing my Prince vinyl (Sexy Dance, long version) about 8:30pm on a Saturday when I hear a knock at the door. It was the guy complaining about "the bass, the bass" (pronounced like 'boss' because he's German) and could I turn it down. Okay fine - even though it wasn't loud and it was early evening. He also came down once in the middle of the day (12:30/1pm) to complain about music, which again was not loud. It was being played from a computer so, really, how loud could it be? And it was the middle of the day, not 4 in the morning!

They have a terrace which happens to be directly above my bedroom. Every morning I would be awoken between 6am-6:30am by what sounded like them moving furniture. I don't need to get up until 8:30am, so to be woken up 2 hours early and not be able to fall back asleep was really grating on my nerves. After about 4 days of this, I went upstairs at 6:30am and knocked on the door. When he answered I explained that my bedroom ceiling was his terrace floor and asked him if he could please stop moving furnture. First he tried to lie like he didn't know what I was talking about, then he was like, "We like to have breakfast on the terrace in the morning." I asked him please, could he be more conscientious about moving the furniture since it was waking me up 2 hours earlier than necessary. It sort of stopped after that, but not entirely. Since then I decided I didn't care as much if I played loud music at midnight. mad Luckily the weather is getting colder so the days of outdoor breakfasts are numbered, and they have been out of town for a month or more. (The guy has a package downstairs in the vestibule that's been sitting there since early September!)

Hi! I was just thinking that I hadn't seen you on here in a while.

How have you been? smile

Anyway... Like I said in the other post above, my office is in the front of the house.

I have speakers connected to my computer, so sometimes the music is loud. The lady next door told me with a judgmental tone that she can hear it outside. And?

I understand that it's different when you live in an apartment, but I pay the mortgage, so guess what... lol

The house to the left of mine is empty now which is of course a perfect way to never have trouble, but it's also kinda boring. Even for one of my cats who was very popular with the folks who used to live there. I pissed off the neighbors on the other side once by playing Bob Dylan really loud. Well it was 2 in the morning so I understand! I need to stay friends with them anyway because they are the ones who feed my cats whenI'm outta town. neko

Hell no! My neighbors are nosey as fuck! Some of them troll up and down the streets getting into other people business. There are a few that I say, "Hello" to but that's about it. A couple of years ago, I happen to talk to the lady who lives a few doors away from me and she told me about what was going on in each and every house on the block (except mine). So I try not to be too friendly. I don't want anyone all up in my mix like that.

Yes we are, on one side we have a lovely lady who was originally from Jamaica, she is cool as fuck, I lover her to pieces, she says things as they are, no holds barred and at the same time she is nice as pie, my Kind of person biggrin On our other side, we have a lovely young couple who are very "to themselves" but we both have a love for Cats, which got us intorduced as our Cats decided to make themselves at home in their home lol. Turned out that the Guy of the couple is an awesome Guitarist and plays slide Guitar, loves all the same blues musicians as I do etc, his partner works in a medical position as does my wife, so it was nice to have someone nearby with common interests so to speak.

Where we used to live was a pure shithole, with drug dealers, smackheads and thieving shits with no respect for anything. It was a pure hell, so living here now, its bliss biggrin

Life is short, don't be a dick.

I'm pretty friendly withmy neighbors though I haven't spoken with them as much lately. My next door neighbor was a couple, is now a single mom with a 5-year-old. I got along with her and her soon to be ex though. They used to have me over all the time and welcomed me to the neighborhood right away. I get along with the two families right across the street. One of them used to rent my place from the previous owner. They could've left it a little cleaner but no big deal. They have a son my daughter's age and those two got along well this summer.

The day we moved into our house (May 2003), I pulled into the driveway with a small Uhaul. Got out of the car and my next door neighbor was watering his lawn. He waved, I waved, and then we stared trying to figure out where the hell we knew each other from. After a minute or so I realized he was my Jr. High ASB Advisor who I hadnt seen since 1989. "Holy shit! What up, Mr. Williams!" It was pretty awesome. We became really good friends...watching football, baseball, basketball together whenever possible...and his youngest son was about a year older than my oldest so they became best of friends, played on the same pop warner football team for three years. Again...it was awesome.

Then everyone started losing their houses and our whole neighborhood practically emptied out. Mr. Williams and his fam sold their house right before the shit hit the fan and moved to Texas. Now my neighborhood has been totally bought up by Chaldeans (Catholic Iraqi refugees). They all know each other, some are related...it's weird. They bought six of our cul de sacs 10 houses.

I am friends with one of them though, my new next door neighbor. He owns a pizza shop and is always bringing me pizza at one in the morning when he comes home and sees me still up in the garage.
